When I think of Cam Newton, I think of what might have been. What might have been if he hadn't stolen that laptop and painted it with black enamel like a thrice-stolen hood bike? What might have been if he hadn't, upon the cops' arrival, chucked it out the window, (because isn't that what we all do with our laptops?). What might have been if he hadn't accumulated 36 traffic tickets in an 11 month period? What might have been if our campus police and meter maids had not been so aggressively racist? What might have been if he hadn't stolen someone's term paper, erased their name and put his on it? What might have been if the kid whose paper he stole had just accepted the zero he got and moved on? What might have been if Cam had realized that any kid he'd steal a paper from would definitely not accept said zero?

As it was, Cam Newton became a legend in his short time walking the gothic, ivy-covered halls of the University of Florida. He became the fourth son of a preacher to win the Heisman, and, if it wasn't for the strict rules governing the induction into the ring of honor, he'd be nestled there between Youngblood and Spurrier, right where he belongs. But imagine if he wasn't just the shooting star he was here at Florida, loved so very much by middle-aged and bitter black males who suddenly became erection wielding Auburn Tiger and Carolina Panther fans.

Imagine. Imagine what could have been.

And then, as a non-sequitur sequitur, there is this:

Did Mark Wahlberg ever play QB for UF? Did his theft cause him to leave the program

No, he played WR ...for the Philadelphia Eagles I believe.

Personally, I don’t think he would have stayed, theft issue aside. He got beat out by Tebow and wasn’t going to stick around and play second fiddle for a 3rd straight year. Tebow wasn’t being displaced as the 2009 starter no matter what happened in spring practice and it was a given that Tim was coming back for his senior year. Cam was also facing expulsion because of cheating issues, which was a bigger factor than the computer theft, IMO.

Much as I dislike him for how he behaved, he has been injured and that is the reason for the release. Best for him if he retires and tries to make something good out of his time, like charity. Someone will probably try to get something out of him if he will work for the minimum with bonus depending on performance.

Well, the real Vince Papali is 6'2", Dirk Diggler is about 5'6"
What was funny about Wahlberg was MTV showing him dunking on a 6' basketball rim in his driveway or backyard back in 93, I believe.

About the only team I can see sCam going to is the Dolphins. They sure need a QB.

He'll got to the XFL for a couple years and play the victim card .... then his father will negotiate for him to return to an NFL team.

Chargers need a QB, Patriots and Broncos too.

That's if he wants to start. He should just take a pay cut and go be a backup somewhere.

Alex.

I think he has another good season left in him.

He’s been playing injured. He basically got most of last year off. He should go into this season healthier than he’s been in a while.

Still an asshat though.

Alex.

His current injury is the type that is often career ending. At best, he is not the QB he was before.

Wasn't the Plagiarism a bigger issue than the laptop books from a UF perspective? I can barely remember yesterday though...

Heyyyy, post #33 and I'm the first one to mention Will Grier!

Even though he wasn't the most consistent passer at WVU, he showed flashes of excellence and I thought he had an outside chance to be a real baller in the NFL. His hometown team the Panthers gave him a shot last year but apparently were not too impressed with what they saw.

New HC Matt Rhule signed Teddy Bridgewater and also the top QB from the aborted XFL season, P.J. Walker, who played for Rhule at Temple. So it looks like Grier is back down to #3 on the depth chart already.

Will Rhule give Grier a chance to compete in camp for the starting spot, or even the backup spot ahead of Walker?

Magic 8 Ball says signs do not look promising. Giving Grier the starting or even backup nod would be like Rhule admitting he brought in two guys who weren't as good as the holdover on the bench. As a new, untested HC, his ego is probably too fragile for that.

So what's next for Grier? Ride the pine or ask for a trade?

He will never be a consistent starter as he lacks the arm strength to scare NFL defenses. As for the panthers, it depends on whether Rhule wants to carry 2 or 3 QBs. If 3, Grier will be on the team. If Rhule decides to only carry 2 like most nfl teams, then I think he gets cut.

Most NFL teams only carry 2 now? Wow. I knew a lot did but I didn't know it was most. Seems risky.

The truth is, it is very rare for a team to need a 3rd QB in a game. I think it has only happened a handful of times in the last 40 years. So, teams started using that spot for more depth at another position. Grier will have a job regardless of what happens. He is talented enough to get a look by someone. My jags have no backup at the moment.

Grier is as good as released, whenever they have a draft they will grab someone in the late rounds to be the 3rd string/practice squad guy.

He'll need to catch on somewhere else.

Sure, it's very rare to need a 3rd QB in a game. But you will need one the next week if your starter can't come back. Then you're one play away from having to put in the brand new guy you just signed. Unless you carried a QB on your practice squad who you trust to send in the game.

A lot of teams do carry a guy on the practice squad. Often, if a third QB is needed, he isn't the one given the roster spot. They sign a vet. Truthfully, if a starter is lost for any lengthy amount of time, their season is done. How much more so with a third team QB? I think Rhule will be a disaster in the nfl. Grier is better off finding a better situation.

Chargers will likely swoop Newton up. They desperately need someone to put some asses in the seats out there, as their stadium is a ghost town.

Tyrod Taylor is currently their starter, and he's just a poor man's Newton who couldn't draw flies. No one is showing up to see Tyrod Taylor.
