I’ve evolved on this issue. When he was coaching Ohio State, he was dead to me. Now that he’s out of coaching, I’m ready to let him in. You cannot deny the results and accomplishments. Plus, he’s obviously been reaching out to try and regain favor in Gator Nation. I think if this is going to happen, it needs to happen sooner than later. I think the chances of him getting in lessen if a) Mullen and/or Stricklin aren’t at UF and b) Meyer gets another job at a high profile school. I think all parties need to strike while the iron is hot if this is going to happen.

Urban may have the morals and personality of a used car salesman, but he also has two national titles as head coach. The question isn't if, it's when he is induced into the Ring of Honor.

Thanks for the great times, Urban. The wins in Arizona and Miami brought great pride to all of us......You were never more than a hired gun and you earned every penny. ROH certainly.

This is why I dislike these seemingly annual articles. Yes, he fits the criteria. We all get that. But even putting the nature of his departure aside, it shouldn't be while he's actively coaching other teams. I get that he's not currently, but most agree he'll be back in the game at some point in the future. When it appears he's officially hanging it up, then fine. Until then, it's just pointless to debate or for these writers to make it seem as if the decision hasn't already been made.

And I felt the same way with Spurrier. I would've rather we waited until he was done at Usce, especially considering he was in our division and a Moss block away from derailing one of our 3 total NC bids just weeks after his induction. Before Tebow, I believe he met more of the criteria than anyone and almost embodied UF football. And given his age, that one makes a little more sense. But Meyer has plenty of time. There's no need to rush.

No one is saying rushing... but it's just when... when he is truly done.

I get that we're not technically saying it. But the idea of the same oped being published every year, as if it hasn't already been recognized, is my issue. Assuming he's not in by this point next year, I guarantee there will be another one just like it, revisiting all the reasons why. In effect, they're the ones rushing things in that they keep bringing it up.

We are coming up on ten years since he left and it is interesting to me to see how divided people still are on CUM. Personally, I was irritated at him for a while for referring to UF as a "broken program" shortly after he left, as if somehow that wasn't a reflection on him. However, as @EyeDocGator noted, time heals all wounds and two Natty's is two Natty's. So, sure, what the hell; add him. If nothing else it will give us a few days of seeing some tributes to the good old days.

To be fair to the author, what the hell else do sportswriters have to do right now?

This is just about getting clicks and views. The author knows it, and peoples reactions show it.

Sofla is on the same page as I am.

When it’s clear that Meyer is done with his ongoing “Climb to the mountain top” we can talk about ROH. Until then we should table this discussion.

I would really struggle with an Urban Meyer coached Bama team (don’t laugh because he will coach anywhere he wants) walking into the Swamp in a few years.

I see no reason to do this before his career is actually over.

Ring of Honor at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

For a player or coach to merit consideration for induction into the Gators Football Ring of Honor, at least one of the following criteria must be met. In addition, the individual must have been departed from UF for at least five seasons, and he must be in good standing with the institution.

Criteria to Merit Consideration
  • Heisman Trophy Winners (Spurrier, Wuerffel)
  • Former UF All-Americans Inducted into NFL Hall of Fame for Accomplishments as Players (Youngblood)
  • Former UF All-Americans Who Are NFL Career Category Leaders (E. Smith – rushing)
  • Collegiate Career Category Leaders
  • Coaches with UF National Championships (Spurrier)
  • Coaches with at least 3 UF SEC Championships (Spurrier)
  • Players with 2 or more consensus All-American honors (AP, Walter Camp, Sporting News, AFCA, FWAA, UPI) who have also been named National Offensive/Defensive Players of Year (AP, Walter Camp, Sporting News, ABC, AFCA, FWAA, UPI)
