GiG sounds like he would have fired Billy D in 01-05 when the Gators had first weekend flame outs with talented rosters we had back then. Also in 07-10 when we went to the NIT and had a first weekend flame out then too. 10 years out of the 19 years that Billy D was at UF, we either had a losing record, went to the NIT, or had a 1st weekend NCAA Tourney flameout. It happens to the best of coaches.
A lot of people wanted BD gone by ‘05. That looks stupid now, and it certainly was. It was wrong because BD had demonstrated the ability to consistently recruit at a blue blood level, had an enjoyable style of play to watch, and was clearly not undermining his talent. He was getting us a seat at the big boy poker table - which is fun! This is all you can ask for as fan. If such a coach sticks around long enough, odds are a championship will happen.
Sully’s program fits this model perfectly. He’s the last coach UF should fire (unless he loses another game - then fire him).
As sad as it is to contemplate this, Kirby Smart will almost undoubtedly win one. He’s not a great coach but good enough. Kind of like Dean Smith was with UNC hoops.
Conversely, some coaches recruit well but are obviously so tactically and logistically deficient they undermine talent - Zook, Muschamp. I think White is currently an active member of this club, but he’s young and maybe can grow out of it.
Mullen is in an entirely different club - excellent coach with deficits in recruiting. Might get us a seat at the table once in a rare while, but we will win about as many NC’s as past Boise under Petersen, Utah under Whittingham, or UVA under Mendenhall whom all are even better coaches but recruiting at an even lower level.
Championships are built on consistently recruiting at an elite level, coaching just well enough to get into the playoffs often, and doing this for a sufficient number of attempts to allow the chips to fall your way once in awhile.
