Don Shula is a major reason I became a Dolphins fan at an early age. Then again, the Dolphins at the time were the only NFL team in Florida.

Sad news, I could still name half the players from his 74 and 75 teams. It took 30 years of complete ineptitude turn me away from the dolphins.

I attended the final regular season game of the 72 Dolphins, and got to see Johnny U. play and Griese came back before the playoffs. I got to meet Shula twice as an adult. He was always an Ass.But with those accomplishments, i guess was allowed to be an ass. i was a DIE HARD Fins fan growing up in Plantation in the 70's and early 80's. Stopped pulling for them the day Jimmy Johnson became the coach.

Kind of where all the love of football started probably for a bunch of us Floridians. Don Shula and the 70's Dolphins were the first sports figures I knew as a youngster in Key Largo. I remember going to Orange Bowl with Dad for a few games when the porpoises were in the end zone. Had a Czonka #39 jersey.

Shula was the first to show that a football team from the state of Florida could be a champion on the national level. Florida was not just about beaches and sand in your shoes. Steve Spurrier turned Fun 'N Sun into Fun 'N Gun championship football on the collegiate level.

2 of the greatest coaches of all time.

Chuck would like to throw his hat in that ring as well...

In ranking the all-time great NFL coaches, Shula is ranked somewhere between 22 and 30.

After the lucky undefeated season, Shula never won anything again. In fact, it takes a special kind of coach to never win a damn thing with Dan Marino.

Bill Belicheck would have won at least 5 Super Bowls with Marino.
