They can be anything that means something special to you. They can cost a small fortune or not be worth much from a material standpoint. But it’s something you’re proud of and having it either makes you feel real special or connects you with something that does.

This little homemade tractor was something my granddaddy picked up on one of the King Edward farms when he was making his maintenance rounds. A little boy that lived in one of the tenant houses had made it out of a corn cob, a piece of tin, a plastic jug, some sticks and wire, and the wheels off of an old Tonka truck that somebody had thrown away. He showed it to my granddad, who made over it pretty special, admiring the boy’s ingenuity. “Hey Mister Buster...you wanna buy it?” Not quite knowing what to make of the sales pitch, my granddad replied “maybe, what’ll you take for it?” One dollar was the selling price. Granddaddy held it up, giving it the once over. “I think it’s worth more than that. How ‘bout ten dollars?!” Done deal.

That was probably more money than the boy had ever seen in his life. My granddaddy appreciated his imagination and salesmanship. He told me later that it reminded him of his sparse upbringing and some of the things he would manufacture to play with since there were no store bought things much other than a few staples and an occasional pair of overalls. I keep it because it reminds me of him and all the things he taught me and the really good times we spent where you didn’t need much more than good company. What’s your prized possession?
