He isn't the greatest game day coach. Not even close. He struggled when his X's werent better than your O's. His playcalling wasn't particularly good and usually predictable. You knew Percy was getting the ball when he came on the field. You knew Tebow was running Q power on 3rd or 4th and short. YOU JUST COULDN'T STOP THEM.

He was the best at preparing IMO. The best at getting all the details right (well, he and Saban). The best special teams coach in history, with no other arguable competition. One of the best recruiters and the best at putting together a staff. Once he got to a program that would give him a level playing field with Saban, he kept pace.

Saban isn't a great playcaller or gameday coach either. You can't lose to Malzahn with 1/3 of the talent several times and be a great gameday coach.
You are always a donkey, but sometimes you are a clever donkey.

Beating OSU and OU in the championship games were beautiful. OSU beating gumps a few years ago was similar. 3 National Championships when no one game him a chance.

Yes, during those games when Harvins wasnt suspended for having headaches.

and ankle sprains

Coaches should've stopped confiscating his weed.

All those guys smoked, and the coaches knew it. It was hell on the assistants to get some of the guys to come in for piss tests. Harvin just never cared enough to try and mask it

Well.... I believe he did get quite a few of those. He was often carried off the field.

it's the price to be paid when you run an offense focused on wide receivers making short catches in front of linebackers and hoping they "make someone miss".

Often those big ass SEC LBs dont miss.

I agree with every bit of this. SOS was a genius at adjusting on the fly. He had too because he wasn't a prepared type guy.

He had plenty of flaws too. Didn't much like recruiting. Was completely hands off with the defense, generally didn't hire well at DC, and allowed his DCs to lose way too many damn games. Did STs exist under SOS? I don't really remember.

One thing about Coach was that his desire to do things "his own way" also led to the lack of a shotgun formation for too long, the unnecessary "I'll show you, Holtz" against ND, the Nebraska Disaster, and the continued employment of Ron Zook (though that might have been to take some of that undesired recruiting burden off of himself).

But I will take some of those all day long because the same traits unlocked the most tasty results of my Gator fandom, and he cleared out all the ghosts and curses (including being completely marginalized by the media) previous to his stewardship.

Not having games on TV due to NCAA ban tends to do that, especially when only about 3 networks were showing games. If you aren't on tv for almost half the previous decade, the media tends to overlook you.
