Rivals.com - Transfer Tracker: Former five-star LSU LB Marcel Brooks enters portal

AS A RECRUIT
Brooks committed to LSU during the spring of his junior year and stuck with the Tigers despite a national list of schools, including Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama and others making their pitches.

AT LSU
Brooks saw plenty of action as a true freshman for the national champion Tigers, playing in 11 games and logging 118 total snaps. After serving as first round pick Patrick Queen's backup for most of the year, Brooks was expected to compete for a starting spot in 2020. Brooks surprisingly entered the transfer portal on Friday and will have three years of eligibility at his next school.

POTENTIAL LANDING SPOTS
Baylor would seem like a logical landing spot, especially since ex-Tigers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is now the head coach in Waco. Aranda helped recruit Brooks, a Texas native, If a reunion with Aranda doesn't happen, Brooks should still have plenty of other options.

FARRELL'S TAKE
"Brooks is an elite athlete who covers a ton of ground and was set to be the next great linebacker at LSU. He has skills in coverage as well as the ability to run everything down and blitz. He was a 5 star prospect for a reason and had a great frame to grow on. He’s a big deal on the transfer market.." -- National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell

Impact Rating: 9.1 out of 10

Darron LeeKANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Tall, long, rangy athlete with outstanding frame. Good height and a huge wingspan. Bulking potential is very high given his frame. Dynamic athlete who shows outstanding playmaking ability on both sides of the ball. Dominant at times against strong competition in Texas' largest classification. Has shown impact playmaking ability at outside linebacker, receiver, and even DB. Projects to outside linebacker with a very high ceiling as a pass-rusher. Outstanding top-end speed relative to projected position. Explodes off the edge and closes fast. Dangerous in backside pursuit. Powerful striker. Scheme-versatile. Plays with a mean streak. While the frame potential is outstanding, considerable bulk addition must occur to play in the box at the high-major level, possibly leading to an adjustment to playing heavier. Raw from a technical standpoint relative to his projected position. A bit narrow and will need to build size and strength to combat college linemen, particularly in the running game. Will need to acclimate physically and technically to every-down grind at the line of scrimmage if asked to play from the edge.

I’m on my phone and not going to look up the two articles. But, they said Brooks played safety, not LB, last season. Now, it could have been a hybrid role. Espn specifically stated he moved from safety to linebacker.

from ESPN:

Brooks appeared in 11 games as a reserve last season for the national champion Tigers, recording eight tackles and 1.5 sacks. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Brooks played mostly safety in 2019 but also showed promise in pass-rushing situations. LSU converted him to linebacker this spring to play in the scheme under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.

ESPN rated Brooks, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, as the No. 86 overall player and No. 12 Texas prospect in the 2019 recruiting class.

From SI:

LSU sophomore linebacker Marcel Brooks has entered the NCAA transfer portal according to multiple reports.

The news was first reported by 247Sports Shea Dixon, who also reported that Brooks alerted the LSU coaching staff of his decision early Friday morning. A former five-star safety and No. 32 overall player in the 2019 recruiting class, Brooks was viewed as a nucleus piece for the LSU defense moving forward.

The move allows other college programs to reach out to Brooks, or the sophomore can eventually decide to remove his name from the portal and return to LSU.

Brooks was recruited as a safety but transitioned to outside linebacker in his first season with the Tigers. In 11 appearances, Brooks recorded eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss. LSU ultimately decided to bump him inside and compete at one of those two spots for the upcoming 2020 season.

At an early point in the offseason, it looked as though Brooks could find a significant role if he picked up on the position in relatively quick fashion. Inside linebacker was one of the positions that lacked depth after the departure of Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips.

When the team added North Dakota State linebacker Jabril Cox as a graduate transfer, the team was given additional depth. Cox and junior Damone Clark are penciled in as the likely starters, though it was expected that Brooks, Micah Baskerville and freshmen Antoine Sampah and Josh White would compete for playing time.

“We didn't have any linebackers," Orgeron said during a spring practice press conference. "We had no choice but to put (Brooks) at linebacker and he's done phenomenal. As we all know, he's very fast and once he catches onto the scheme, I think he's going to be an excellent linebacker."

It will be interesting to watch if Brooks ultimately sticks with his decision to transfer or elect to stay with the program. If he were to leave for another Division I program, he’d have to sit out a year due to transfer rules.

Is he leaving LSWho because he got moved to LB?

Does it look like he got recruited for safety? And then moved to OLB? And then ILB?

From reading Tiger $hittings, he is still in the 190 range. Brooks has gained no weight since arriving at lswho. He wants to play safety but the staff insists on moving him to LB. That tells me he isn't fast enough to play safety in the sec. First, it was ILB. Then they moved him to OLB. No one is stupid enough to play a 190 pound OLB in the sec. Well, except for Grantham.
