Alex.

Not sure if that is you in the pick, but I will take this opportunity for a brief basic pruning guide:

Cut one - under cut about 1/4 way into the branch. Main reason is to avoid stripping the bark (unnecessary wound)

Cut two - cut down about 2 - 4 inches out away from the initial cut. Once you get about halfway or more, the should actually snap itself off and drop straight down

Cut three - Removal of stub - NOT flush with trunk.

Edit - In addition to being good for the tree, this method avoids binding your saw - manual or chain.

We've taken down so many locust and water maples over the years but a few came down on their own. This one was a halloween night storm about 7 years ago. It fell right on our detached garage that we were remodeling at the time. Turned it into insurance and it actually helped with the remodel.

This one also fell during a night storm. We didn't know that the 65 year old septic lines ran out that direction and after repeatedly running over it with the tractor and logs it ruined the lines. We assumed the lines went into the pasture. Plus 65 year old lines aren't the best anyway. Had to replace the septic last summer. What a load of crap! :kiffin:

I've had a couple of trees come down at my primary home in Arlington (my back yard is a big hill). I have a tree right behind my detached garage that I've been praying will take out the garage - so I can get a fat check and rebuild it!! But, it's been almost 10 years in this house and nothing. We're planning to sell next year, so I'll likely never see that new garage...dammit!

Sure you will. The tree will fall the day you put the house on the market and you'll have to get it cleared up and re-built to be able to sell the house. You'll see the new garage; you'll just never get the pleasure of using it. At least that's the way my life works......

I’ve always wondered why insurance would rather write a check to repair a structure rather than help pay to remove dangerous trees.

It’s really the only way to get it out.
Lol, ok, but that isn't entirely true since when running the saw the oil is injected onto the chain. But I suppose I wasn't as clear as I meant to be. Why would anyone need to drain the bar oil except for when/if it needed to be worked on? The impression I got from the earlier post was that he drains the oil when he is going to store the saw...

1. Not me in the pics. Those are from the company.

2. Yes, drain after every use. I don’t like little oil puddles on the garage floor. Not a big deal when I’m only trimming the palms a couple times a year.

I've had a Stihl Farm Boss. It's a good chain saw. But I've pretty much gone electric for all my yard tools. I really like the EGO product line. I have an EGO push mower, trimmer, blower, edger, and chain pole saw. All are cordless electric. Don't get a corded piece of equipment. Don't have to worry with gas and oil. I believe the power of the electric motors is as good or better than the gasoline. I don't have an EGO chain saw but I would buy one if I thought I needed another chain saw. On the electric chain saws you do have to use bar oil.

I have a Ryobi electric riding mower. It does the job on my one acre. When I had 12 acres and mowed about 5 acres the electric riding mower would not have held up. I had a John Deere gasoline riding mower and it was awesome. EGO is coming out with an electric riding mower next year. Can't wait to see it. Greenworks has some electric riding mowers that are commercial grade but the cost is prohibitive for the typical homeowner.

I think electric lawn equipment is the wave of the future. EGO is a great product line.

Forgot to mention that I also have a Dewalt battery operated saw, had it for about a year now. I’m real pleased so far. It came razor sharp out of the box and it will give you a good hours worth of medium duty work like pruning and such. I bought it because I got a great pawn shop deal on a box of used dewalt tools and batteries, so I was already set up.
A good friend of mine has a Milwaukee electric chainsaw. That thing is bad ass, and I’m not easily impressed by equipment. If I had a Milwaukee setup for everything else I wouldn’t hesitate to own one.

I bought an el cheapo Homelite from home depot years ago and the damn thing just wont quit. My go to saw though is a Stihl 170, Not a pro model but I;m not a pro tree cutter.
Can't give me a poulan saw, Had nothing but trouble out of those.
Always have run pump gas with oil mix and have never had a fuel issue besides the plastic lines breaking (poulan)

Had a tree fall during Irma and have yet to find a tree service that'll touch it so I whittle at it a bit at a time

I still haven't used the new saw. It's in my garage here in Arlington, we haven't gone out to the cabin in a few weeks. I'm heading to Florida on Sunday for 10 days - I should probably bring it w/ me in case that storm hits the west coast!

On another note: I worked my last day in the Coast Guard on Wednesday! I officially retire on Sept 1st.

Aren’t you worried it will get damaged when the tree falls on the garage? (Plus the fact that that’s when you’ll need it most.)
Congrats on your retirement! It’s a great feeling (especially on the first of every month).

Well, my garage is in Arlington, VA. If it was in Florida I'd be doing a 'rain dance' and making a sacrifice to the Gods!!

I'm out at the cabin, just went outside to do some tree work and....

Resized_20210130_113813.jpeg

WTF?

I didn't even really pull it, it just came right out when I tugged on it. I'm wondering if a rat or mouse chewed on it. It's under warranty but that doesn't help me right now.
