In Gainesville visiting and drove by today and saw that. A real shame. The two regal movie theaters on Windmeadows dr and Newberry road are being left to rot and Leonardo’s 706 closed down after 47 years.

Had my rehearsal dinner at 706 - 19 years ago. Great food. Nothing is forever.

I moved out of the city limits last year. couldn’t live with myself giving money to the idiots that run the city. (The mayor supports Antifa).

moved to the western portion of the county, more property and bigger house, mortgage barely moved and the utility bill went WAY down.

Sad to see the swamp go

Just think, 40 years from now current UF students will be lamenting the tearing down of one of a kind iconic and nostalgic places that make a city interesting like.........ahhh......ummmm..........the Starbucks that also served breakfast sandwiches?

I’m curious what the financials were in getting the swamp torn down. Unless things changed recently, that place was a cash cow on a prime piece of real estate.

I imagine the owner of the Swamp cashed a 7 figure check.

You’re right. It just seems that the town is losing its charm.

Lost already is probably more accurate. Some guy mentioned the city commission sux and someone moved out so as not to be help hostage by GRU. Well I recently left after trying living there for 3 years. All of the things you all mentioned are it in a nutshell. It was very disappointing.

No he didnt own the property. The developer is putting the restraunt into new retail space under the apartments. He is getting a new modern buildout with a new 10+ yr lease.

The homeless issue in Gainesville seems to be a SERIOUS issue. When I lived there just 4 years ago there was always SOME bums but now they seem to be on every major intersection. What's the deal?

Well I did not even go there. I feel for the homeless but the city seems like they encourage it and go out of their way NOT to try and do anything. It got so bad when I was there that near the airport on 39th Ave. and Waldo Road there was 8 people begging, 2 each on the 4 intersections. It got so crowded at 75 and Newberry road that they started working their way east toward campus. The crowd made it down past 60th and almost to G'ville Health and Fitness and there was always 1 or 2 at 34th St. and SW 2nd Ave. Between the incredible amount of thievery by GRU and the city, the locals openly smoking pot and the city reeking of pot and the homeless, it appears that my description one day 2 years ago of it being a mini Portland (prior to the riots) is changing into it mirroring Portland.

Heck the Swamp wasn't even there when I went to school. I would go back to Gainesville and look at it like some newfangled thing that kids go to instead of the real bars like the Porpoise or CJs.

CJ's was never CJ's once it left its small spot at roughly 34th and Archer.

That's a real shame. About a year and a half ago, I had a job offer in Gainesville and one here in Destin and I really thought long and hard before I made my decision, and chose to be near the ocean. Although, we were also wanting to go back to Gainesville because it feels like home to us to a large degree. I saw a lot of sad things while we were there this past week. I'm ultimately glad that we decided to move where we did.
