we have a lot of talent at WR, but none proven. Grimes showed flashes, but he needs to step up as a consistent playmaker. Pitts is a solid #1 target as a TE, but we really don't have anyone else that we can point to and say we trust them based on what they did last year.

Hell Fraziers may end up our 2nd best WR this year.

We have a loaded offense but how well will the O Line perform?

I’m trying to think of the last time we had a good offensive line for the entire season. I know 2012 had moments in the run game, and ‘18 improved throughout the year. But aside from that it’s probably been well over a decade since I felt comfortable with our OL. So I never go in expecting much.

2012 run game really didnt have its moments. Remember we had to bring in two extra linemen as TEs to do anything and getting to 20 points even vs an sec team usually required defensive points.

Of course, through the last 15 years most of our OL problems have been exacerbated if not caused by piss poor (and incredibly predictable) offensive play calling.

True. I just remember being somewhat adequate running the ball, and at least felt comfortable with the talent we had on the OL. But yes, the jumbo was a big part of that. We're improved from having 5 guys total and bringing in Mason "Shakeweight" Halter from Fordham, but still not expecting to be impressed.

And some very inconsistent and often poor recruiting. During that time frame, how many 5* OLs have we signed who actually lived up to their billing?

Chaz Green(4*). And Humphries wasn't terrible. All I got. The rest seem to be either busts, or 2-3* players that played about like what we should've expected. And my goodness, over the last 20 years I couldn't tell you how many JuCo's we've brought in that were horrific.

OLs probably need the most development (other than QB) of any position. If they go Juco they’ve lost 2 years of development. That’s the reason I think it doesn’t work.

Trent Brown was a JUCO, he was a starter but didn't really stand out. He's now the highest paid OL in the NFL (or he was, maybe somebody got a bigger contract since?). But yes, our OL play since 2010-ish has been horrible, mediocre at best.

Honestly, Im not concerned about 5 star linemen. They usually suck and are just trying to get to the NFL as quickly as possible. Our last few 5 star linemen have been dudes with pulses who were useless in yr 1& 2 and barely mediocre in Yr 3 and gone. Most 5 stars are athletes who can dunk a basketball but not ready yet. I get that is the way NFL likes them but Im only concerned about college production not what they will develop to be later.

On the OL (or at DT) give me 3+-4 stars with a chip on their shoulders who will work hard. A 5th year 2nd or 3rd tier lineman usually beats a 5 star true junior.

Probably didnt even know the playbook yet.

OL needs cohesion. And quality depth (sonthe dinged up guys can rest instead of getting hurt worse while playing hobbled).

But, yeah, lets keep signing 6-8 DBs instead bc they are easier to find and the elite schools dont want a roster with the wrong balance.

I think the only 5* OL we've signed since Meyer left was Martez Ivey and he was essentially an average player, at best. He was a 3 (maybe 4?) year starter, but never really improved. He had a good 2018 under Hevesy, but too little/too late. Never made it in the NFL (as far as I remember).

We did that during Urban's years too. I remember having an OT (Jason Watkins) wearing # 89. Of course, you probably were a Canes fan back then so you won't remember.
