Hating on Tom Cruise is acceptable--nay, encouraged--hating on the movie is not. There could've easily been better eye candy and the volleyball scene was unnecessary (admittedly), but if you're hating on fast jets and giving the commies an ass-kicking, then you're aren't a red-blooded, straight American male.
You’d hold one in your mouth, wouldn’t you?

A lot of great movies mentioned, but I'll have to go with Saving Private Ryan. I know it didn't even win Best Picture, but it should have.

Another great movie that was beat out by a boring ass formulaic dribble, Shakespeare in Love fuching paint by numbers chick flick.

It’s a top pick for sure. Truthfully, I could have done a complete Duke top 5 with True Grit, The Shootist, The Cowboys, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and McLintock!
Not one his greatest, but I have always loved Big Jake for some reason. Maybe it was the dog.

The dog was a good touch. I’m a sucker for dogs in movies in general. Big Jake had a great cast, many regulars in the Duke’s movies. Harry Carey Jr. as “Pop,” one of the outlaws, brought one of the old cowboys back to the screen. The Duke’s three sons all had a part in it. Patrick and Ethan as co-stars and son Michael as producer.

It was a pretty bad ass dog.
You are right about the cast: Maureen O’Hara as his wife and Richard Boone as the main outlaw were great. In addition to Wayne’s son playing one of Jake’ sons, one of the others was played by Christopher Mitchum, who was Robert Mitchum’s son. Also with a small role was Jim Davis as head of the lynching party intent on killing the sheep farmer. Davis later achieved wider fame as Jock Ewing on Dallas.

I may have been about 8 or so when this came out and remember crying when the Duke died.
He didn't die in too many of them... Sands of Iwo Jima comes to mind as well as The Shootist.

Just great, I was about to watch the Cowboys, Iwo Jima and the Shootist for the first time. :sadnanner:

Just kidding

Still working on my book... "Hondo Lane's rules for raising boys to be men."

PS Hondo's dog Sam was the best dog ever... he could smell injuns because he was trained by having an injun beat him with a stick, so anytime Sam smelled an injun, he growled. That's my follow-up best seller... "How to train your dog, Hondo style"

Not the best movie. If I said I really liked it I'd be pummeled because it's a chick flick. But it's got one of the best lines ever.
