Just to be nitpicky, the 2009 quote was Urban.
You're right of course. In my blind rage last night I barely paid any attention. I was just glad to see someone else noticing the God awful coachspeak we were getting.

I think that's maybe the least annoying quote of the ones listed at least.

If you watch the presser you can see clearly that Dan’s very upset. Out of the 2+ years Dan has been here, when would he ever publicly say he’s going to make personnel changes? Never!
And what does firing Grantham now accomplish? They would just promote an interim until season’s end.

And no I’m not saying trust the coaches or any of the other ridiculous retorts people come up with around here. Just making observations.

And most importantly you don’t want to deal with the ripples of a firing mid season for recruiting purposes. You can’t just throw those relationships away.

True. I wouldn’t mind this scenario.
Legit question: Is it Grantham’s defensive philosophy to be really small inside(DL and LBs)? Or is it a function of an inability to recruit those positions? I haven’t followed him enough to pick up a trend either way.

There's no reason he can't fire Grantham mid season. Defense can't get worse. And what must be done eventually should be done immediately. But it's a moot point because Dan won't do it. He lacks the killer instinct that all great coaches have. Apparently he'd rather go down with his friends. Tigers rarely change their stripes. I gave Mullen last off season to make coaching changes and, right in character, he didn't.
To paraphrase a great man: "What we've got here is... a failure to make coaching changes. Some coaches you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men".

We are what we are and that ain't changing anytime soon. All your gnashing of teeth and in depth analysis is comical. The results are inevitable and as another great man said "if it's inevitable, just lay back and enjoy it".

Is Gray a legit coach? Our DB play has become worse over the last two years. Guys that are "vets" are playing flat footed and out of position which is an indication that technique and scheme isn't being coached correctly. I'd argue that under Gray, the DBs have regressed; can you name a single DB that has shown any improvement? I sure can't and although scheme is on TG, technique is by position coach. Defense needs the house cleaned. Every single position has not improved.

Do we have a guy on staff that can design a defense with this personnel to force a team to punt like 4-5 times a game? With the efficiency of the present offense, we'd likely win damn near every game left besides Ugay.

4-5 punts would be damm good. With this offense, we don't that many; 3 would do. If we had forced just one more punt yesterday, we would have won.

I know I’ve been a big proponent for Dan Mullen on this site. All of us have had our concerns about him, and in particular none of us have liked or wanted Todd Grantham. Offensively, Dan Mullen has me smitten. Defensively, I’m ripping my hair out. Every single thing wrong with this team rests on his shoulders, and his shoulders alone.

Our defense cannot cover, cannot tackle, and cannot penetrate or generate push up front. Our defensive personnel has been loaded with players designed for a scheme that works in the ACC, Big 12, and the AAC. It’s a defense that clearly only cares about generating sacks, and yesterday they couldn’t even do that.

Mullen and the good guys had the ball with 3:40 left to go and MULLEN decided to tote the rock to Malik Davis, over our best Running Back this season who’s proven he can hold on to the ball, and fight for tough yards. Why as a head coach would you not keep your best players in the game during crunch time situations? If they’re tired or gassed that’s one thing; but he was trying to be cute and keep the reps even between the RBs and it was undeniably stupid.

Mullen lost this game. He lost it with the decision to employ Granthams defense and not wholesale make changes after the first two games. Make no mistake, our defense was disgusting the first two games, too. No one hit the panic button because we won. And he lost this game by choosing not to hand the ball to the best running back on the field and utilizing your best players under crunch time situations.

I’m not calling for him to be fired yet bc have been very pleased with the offensive production, but he is now starting to trend negatively with me with his decision making. I am calling for Grantham to be fired. However, if Mullen doesn’t sack up and start cutting ties; and rides this disaster wave out with Grantham then I do not see how or why we’d want to keep him?
