The Queen's Gambit (Netflix)
Okay... I know... hear me out though. I'm not much for female character led dramas. However, occasionally, if the actress is attractive enough I can slog my way through. I've not seen Ann Taylor-Joy in any thing before but she has a face made for a particular flavor of porn which makes her watchable. She plays a chess prodigy (Beth Harmon) in the 60's who over seven episodes beats the snot out of everyone. Harmon has a bit of a love for tranqs and booze. The tranquilizers relax her to the point where she can see a chess board in her head and play chess on a more intuitive level.
Chess playing and chess watching makes up a lot of the screen time. No car chases, nothing blows up, not even any nudity. But the series is well written, avoiding cringy tropes. The janitor she, as a child, meets in the basement to learn chess isn't a perv. A couple adopt her and the father is not a perv. She does however learn that her crush is gay/bi or as he later describes it "curious". Can't have a story out of Hollyweird without at least one homo, though her charms are enough to eventually turn him straight. And it's implied that she has a one night stand with another woman but nothing more is made of it because... you know... that's normal behavior.
Other than that the dialog is refreshingly believable. Many times I expected the characters to say something stupid and instead utter reasonable responses. Harmon has a lot in common with Bobby Fisher who is said to have been so laser obsessed that he could rarely talk about anything other than Chess. Harmon, the character, however is a bit more personable. In the end ATJ is somewhat mesmerizing to watch do even mundane things.
Joe Bob says check it out.
