NO!! While I don't like our defensive results, I don't know if it is coaching, players, or a combination. The DC only has so much to do with it the individual coaches have some effect.

one of the coaching greats, I forget who now, used to say if a player screws up you fire the player, and if all the players screw up you fire the coach.

I know many people don't understand even the basics of defense but what we do on defense is borderline insane, the equivalent of running double reverses every play, trying to fool everyone every play. corners and linebackers rotating to take deep halves or play center field / FS, defensive ends covering essentially the cornerback responsibilities. defensive backs blitzing. the thing is I guess this kind of sounds cool but we've seen so many times that a safety or a nickel blitz from too far away and they never get there and never do anything. we've also seen corner backs bailing to try to take the place of the safeties who are blitzing or playing robber underneath (at least I think that's what they're doing versus just falling asleep... something's drastically wrong with our ROBBER concepts if that's what they're doing as they've made almost no interceptions playing this). basically it sounds cool but it ends up just not working.

Now some of this works and it's cool on 3rd and long for an exotic blitz but we do it so often, like more often than not. quarterbacks can see it and just take advantage of our stupid mismatches, like an X receiver on a linebacker or safety. or Marco trying to play centerfield from his right cornerback position and the other hash/seam being wide open.

the fact that our defense improved so much when we went with our backups and played just base defenses says a lot.

MOST of the time we should just be playing some sound-based defenses.

I was thinking about Boom the other day. I'm not the type to get mad at coaches who fail. I figure they try their best. If they fail, let them go in peace. But as I thought about Muschamp I became angry. He inherited one of the best programs in the country. Everyone here remembers that in December 2009, going into the SEC Championship Game, we were the apex predator. Muschamp inherited the job just one year later after one wobbly season and within three years we were terrible.

Mac was just Mac. He wasn't close to being good enough to get us out of the ditch, but it was Muschamp who put us there.

On the subject of defense, doesn't it seem that dramatically reduced prep time for this season has given offenses an advantage? I would have predicted the opposite. Maybe it's just coincidence.

Glad boom is gone but when he inherited all of that talent, the locker room was totally broken (thanks to Meyer). He had to fix that.

I think he gave us everything he had, unfortunately being a decent head coach wasn’t something he could be.

Definitely do not want him as DC, anywhere he goes is just a placeholder until he gets his next HC gig.

I don’t buy all the broken BS. I’ve turned around staffs of over 100 within 30 days with minimal turnover. Folks want to do a good job for the most part. They just need a leader to create an environment for them to be successful...and then they will be.
Chump ain’t a leader.

MusDyck? NO :ban:. Let's see. Hire your former HC to come back at a demoted position to the team he drove into a chasm. He is still youngish by coaching standards, so not even MusDyck would consider this. Even if he wanted to, the mutiny would rival the hatred for FOOLEY.

Quinn? Let's see. DC of a super bowl winner. HC of super bowl choker, nonetheless the HC. Still young enough to think he can float around the league. Might take a call from Bama, or Clemmy to discuss HC. Anything less, might cause his brain to explode.

But good thoughts. And people wonder why our fan base is so dumb. As I always said if the guy picked his nose or took a shyt in Gainesburger, many of our fans think his is a gawd.

And yes Joe Lee Dunn Jr. sux ballz and should be gone years ago.

About once a year I check in on the Dungeon. I will be sure to catch up on this thread at that time.
