Very nice write up. I agree with Crete on the score/timing question. Those three 3rd down conversions that we allowed and the fumble is what killed us. A critical time of the game and we just couldnt get off the field and Trask and the O had to stay on the sideline watching.

Good stuff C2. The clock management - leaving 69 seconds on the clock at the end of the first half was inexcusable. But our coach's ego....
Yes that was a big mistake. Watching with my son and son in law and we could not believe the stupidity of not using the play clock. The only thing we could figure was that Mullen thought Bama was not ready for the play.

Great recap, Cover. Once again, our O played well enough to win, but...

If only we had a real defense.

It's all on Dan to do his job at this point. How much we improve depends on his ability to pull the trigger and demand something greater. Nothing leads me to believe he has the balls to do it. Something tells me he will ride this close loss as an example of why we should stay the course we are on. I hope I am wrong.

The game from the defensive side of things went exactly how I thought it would. The offensive guys, like they have much of the season, are the only reason we had some glimmer of hope and why the game was pretty close at the end of it all.

But let me just say this, Kyle Trask has thrown for over 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns. In an offense that virtually had zero running game and a team overall that has a fraction of the talent that Alabama has. Trask should win the Heisman. He was without a doubt the most impressive player given the situation and pressure he was under all year long. The fact that people have virtually stopped talking about that (like Doering) is disgusting. **** them.

Thanks Traz. My first thought would be that finding a better option at RT was a priority given the missed assignments and ole’s we’ve seen in abundance. Whatever the swaps were, the Tide was credited with 5 sacks and we were held to 54 yards rushing, 24 by Emery. So I don’t know that you could call the experiments successful based on your in-game data. I think with the three guys you’ve mentioned, we still don’t have two good tackles among them.

Im not sure what we’re going to have moving forward. I don’t think we did enough on signing day to continue building the depth numbers, nor am I sold on the overall talent. Others have hinted at the portal providing some help, and it could, but then I think that DeLance came by way of the portal! I also think that Hevesy might be underperforming on the field and on the trail. Making a general related comment about the staff, it’s likely time to cut some ties.

I don't think we could have just lined up and powered it in for sure....you need to make sure you utilize 3 downs to score a TD and at that point you would have heard the bitching and moaning if we had just run down the clock and kicked a FG there....you take points in championship games and at home which we didn't do last week which cost us the LSU game(would have been up by 3)....that TD gave the offense the confidence they played with in the 2nd half despite the defense giving it back up IMO. It also signaled to Bama that they wouldn't be able to just salt the game away by mostly running the ball and keeping it out of our hands in the 2nd half.. which they probably would have been able to if we only get a FG there....it's about big mo...

Exactly. Jones and Lawrence have great offensive lines and have, with few exceptions, played awful defenses. Trask picked Bama apart despite having Delance for protection and Bama knowing almost all the plays were going to be passes. I'm pretty sure Trask will not get the Heisman for the same reason it was stolen from Rex.

I don’t believe many Gator fans are surprised with the outcome of the SECCG. I suppose there is some solace to be found in the final score of 52-46, with the Gators having a chance in the second half, albeit a slim one, to pull out a victory. After trailing 35-17 at the half and Bama scoring on five possessions while running twice as many plays, most college football fans had already penciled in the W for Nick Saban and the Tide. They were simply perfection with the football. Actually, their only hiccup was a great takeaway by Trey Dean that was immediately turned back over to Bama when Dean coughed the ball up when he was KTFO’d on the return. When Bama scored on the next play, the pride of a lifelong fan allowed the thought that this probably won’t be our night to creep in.

To their credit, the Gators and Heisman hopeful (unfortunately not shoe in) Kyle Trask kept competing and made it close. The defense, as beleaguered as it was the first half and for all of the season, really, was able to keep Bama out of the end zone in the third quarter and all of a sudden 35-31 didn’t seem insurmountable. But it was not quite enough and the Tide out scored the Gators 17-15 in the final stanza, securing their place in the CFB playoffs. Florida, on the other hand, slinked back to Palooka-ville on the heels of a two game skid and the fear of an 8-4 record looming, depending on the bowl matchup. What could’ve been unfortunately turned into what was and Mullen and Co. begin the self-reflective phase that must require some honest appraisals of what went wrong and what has to change lest this be our high water mark for the second consecutive coaching staff.

*However you cut it, Harris and Smith were more than our defense could handle. I don’t think I’ve seen as much diving at the ankles in one game since my middle school football days. Obviously, Harris engendered some fear in many of our defenders, but that was a total reversal of the grabbing and high tackling that has been our trademark. And it wasn’t any more successful. We couldn’t cover Smith consistently, even playing quite a bit of zone and his TD over Marco Wilson, who was giving him a big cushion in the red zone, pretty much punctuated our futility. Bama’s Mac Jones may well win the Heisman, but if so it would truly be a team award. He was good, but all he had to do was keep the car out of the ditch.

*It seems like there are some head scratchers from Mullen each game in terms of critical play calls. One that sticks out was a Trask keep on third and nine in the first half that was woefully short and killed a possession. It was mentioned that it may have been an automatic if we formationed a numbers advantage in the box and Trask scored a couple of times on this, but third and nine was too big a gamble at that point in the game.

*Bama’s OL is what we wish ours was. If you didn’t see anything else, their two tackles kept our guys on roller skates with their drive blocks and did a great job riding our edge guys up the field on pass plays. They paved the way for 605 total yards that included 187 rushing (178 by Harris). We rushed for 54. It’s Bama, I know, but that’s a pretty staggering difference.

*Trask wasn’t quite as sharp as he could have been, missing a couple of long throws that he usually makes that would have gone for scores. Still, he passed for 408 and three scores while rushing for another as well as a two point conversion. That’s probably good enough to beat anybody else, but not Bama. I appreciate that he left it all out on the field and his competitive spirit, though not as demonstrative as we’ve seen, is there every time he takes the field. He may not win the Heisman, but he is worthy of mention with the other great QBs we’ve enjoyed.

*Toney was a man last night. Eight receptions for 153 yards and a score was big. He has electrified us with his speed and quickness, but the development of his hands and route running was very special.

*What could’ve been. If we hadn’t shot ourselves in the foot in the first half with three Bama drives we had stopped or had a chance to. The winners find a way to make it happen. The other guys talk about what could have been.

*I’ve enjoyed watching Kyle Pitts. Bama was definitely aware of him, he still wound up with seven catches for 129 yards and a score on a great catch over the defender. He’s a special talent and it’s been a pleasure to get to see him develop. I wish there could’ve been one more game we could have seen him ;).

*Boo Chris Doering! It wouldn’t have hurt you to give Trask a little love last night while talking about the Heisman hopefuls. The three Bama guys you pegged are very worthy and I suppose you wanted to avoid the “Homer” tag, but Trask is more than deserving. You’re a great Gator, but the optics were that there was some embarrassment-induced separation.

One more game. Against who is yet to be determined. It doesn’t really matter. There simply has to be a good conclusion to the anti-climax of last evening. Mullen needs it. Even though this season has been anything but normal, some of Dan’s decisions and comments have certainly lessened the confidence and enthusiasm of his leadership in year three. What he does, or doesn’t do, with the defensive personnel will likely make or break him. It’s pretty widely held that he’s a loyal guy and that’s commendable, but ultimately what good is a captain who goes down with the ship?

In parting, I want to thank Ox and all the readership of Gator Chatter. You guys make it easy to get up on Sundays, win or lose, and talk about Gator football! I hope you all have a great Christmas amid this topsy turvy time in our nation’s history and that Santa brings us all a little respite. A lock down D would also be nice! Merry Christmas and Go Gators!

I am never going to say you can score too soon, as I have never felt that. And I do not think anyone is making the point that they did not want to score a TD. The consensus is that we could have run the exact same play 15-17 seconds later. Remember it was only 1st down and perhaps we could not have powered a TD against these guys and might have resulted in us having to try and get cute. I get it we scored a TD, which was the goal, but an extra 20 seconds to ANY team playing our defense is more than an eternity. No one is questioning the score, the obvious mistake is that there was plenty of time for us to work with, use it to OUR advantage and more properly MANAGE the situation.

The Gators have had ups and downs, but Cover2 is undefeated. Once again, well put. Thanks for the thoughts all season.

The clock management - leaving 69 seconds on the clock at the end of the first half was inexcusable. But our coach's ego....

This non-strategy, the 3rd and 9 QB draw, and the 3rd and 11 WR screen in the first half all showed an almost delusional mindset that didn’t grasp we had to play as though we a needed TD on every possession to win/keep up. While the first was not conservative and the last two were, all of them must have emanated from a thought that we might stop them. We didn’t (the penalties happened, so those are not stops).

Re the Heisman, Tebow did the same thing with Trask and focused on Jones/Smith. Dari Noca (sp?) just had Trask was “out” after the last two weeks before turning to Finebaum who picked Trevor Lawrence.

If you like Smith, I get that. But if you solely watched the QBs and the different throws they were making Trask was far superior to Jones. His throws made plays, thread the needle several times, and threw guys open.

Jones’ throws were to teammates that had already made a play or were simply uncovered - almost all to WRs with 7 yards between them and any defender.

Our guy earned it, and so did Smith and Harris. Jones is another Gino Torreta.

EDIT: Aaaand with little surprise Jesse Palmer joins the list of former Gators handing the Heisman to someone else as a foregone conclusion. They aren’t even discussing it as though it’s close.

Say what you will, but it means something to me that we lose to Bama by 6 in the SEC championship game and we bitch, moan and complain about our coaches. We have come a long ways since the days of going to the SEC Championship game and thinking we have no chance (and getting beat by 30 plus).

I like that our players got a taste of what needed to be done to get there and what they need to get back and win.

Given the deficits created by the virus it is more critical than ever to secure as much revenue as possible from the money boosters this year.

For the life of me I can’t see how anyone would be willing to write checks for this football program unless the toad is removed.
Even if you don’t believe he’s the problem, and I absolutely believe he is, the perception of the fan base is that the toad is killing us so it seems imperative that he be “encouraged “ to look elsewhere.

With that said, I won’t be surprised if Mullen retains him.

Trask for the Heisman: Mac Jones on our team is mediocre at best, Trask on Alabama and they are at least the same if not better. Another thing, it seemed to me Mac Jones doesn't pass over the middle nearly as much as Trask is asked to. All world TE of not.

I just had an epiphany!!!! If we do hire a decent DC, he maybe stays for a year or two then leaves for a head coaching job, ala Saban's staff...would be surprised to see Sark @ Bama next year, unless he doesn't need the Benjamins or the HC challenge. In todays world football has just become a business...no loyalty or committment
any more, sad, and I'm still not happy with last night's (close, but no cigar) game...Go Gators...:jog:

There’s something to be said for positional continuity. I have to admit that I wasn’t looking in that direction when responding to your post. But thinking in that way, making block calls and adjustments is easier with somebody you have worked along side in games and practice. I can see where changing things up at this point in the season you might see some errors. From outside looking in, I still think shoring up RT needed earlier attention, but we were winning so it’s easy to just keep getting by...I guess. Likely speaks as much to the roster as any other factor.

You guys are funny.

it's as if you haven't watched our team this year. I mean we just played a team last week who would barely make the scout team for Alabama and got stuffed in the red zone twice after first and goal.

We did see the I Form run successfully on one short scoring play. Weird, huh? :)
