I'll quiet down on the pumping and read the room better next time. Losing sucks, as does a wasted opportunity, and I want us to get back to the mountaintop ASAP. Let's hope this isn't the last chance we'll get in the near future.

 Forget that. Stand your ground and sling some mud around. We're all friends here.

Thanks Ox

I guess my point is that I'm not sold on needing to ditch Mullen yet. It sucks that we wasted Trask and Pitts this year with an abomination of a defense and it's on Mullen that he allowed it to get this bad, but if we overhaul that side of the ball I think we'll see a much smaller setback next year than seems to be the consensus. The offense will be far less vertical and points won't come as quickly, but we'll potentially have a good running attack and still be able to move the ball reliably that way. I prefer the vertical passing we're doing this year, but we did pick up a couple of NCs running sideways, so it can work. We need to get a DC with a better scheme who can actually recruit on that side of the ball if we want to contend.

"We'll see what happens" seems anticlimactic on a message board where we'll be arguing about this constantly until it does, but this off-season and next year are really important for Mullen's future here. If he keeps Grantham then he could flame out as early as next year. Even if he does get rid of him, the proof will be in the pudding of next year's on field product.

I hated losing and won't take solace that we beat the spread and earned Bama's/Saban's respect in the loss. Had we had a mediocre defense, this game could have easily been a win--but I think the main blame is on Mullen's clock mismanagement. I knew giving Bama the ball back with 1:30 minutes to go was a bad idea; just like I knew we'd score against UGAy when we got the ball back with the same time left on the clock. Why Mullen couldn't recognize that is beyond me and leaves me once again questioning his ability as an upper-echelon coach (either he's got incompetent clock management skills or trusts Grantham waaaaay too much--against all evidence to the contrary this season--and neither conclusion is flattering).

I do want to recognize the fight this team put up though. They left it out on the field and put in some herculean efforts out there. I'm proud of that; and will acknowledge that the fact we were competitive against the top program in the country is a step in the right direction. The last 2 times we were in Atlanta, the game was never in doubt and we were outclassed in every way. This past weekend, we were within striking distance and that's something that should be objectively acknowledged. Ultimately, this season's undoings were a historically bad defense and poor clock management. Both of those things are on the head coach to correct and fix.

If we had just an average defense we'd be undefeated. Our D is ranked 66...really?

I’ll be focused on how well Bama’s defense does in the Final Four. CBS put up a graphic last night showing how poorly they played in the first three games and how improved they’ve been over the last seven. Then came last night. Can anyone else do that much damage?
Only Clemson can come close and they don't have the weapons Fl has at receiver, Their QB can pass and run but the Tide Defense will be ready for him.
Bama wins easy.

Truth be told, we are middle of the SEC in yards allowed per game and points per game. But yes, average for a normal year, a team that could get some stops, we would be. If we had LSU's defense from last year, and by no means was that a good defense, we would be having their season this year. That was my big miscalculation in the pre-season. Didn't see the defense dying lying it did, much less the refusal to correct.

This is the new normal.

Teams have remembered the forward pass is legal and thrown away the Butters Era Saban or Grasseater ground and pound playbooks.

So, what your saying is, this is an average, not a poor defense?
Imnsaying defense better get out of the 1950s in a hurry bc the offenses are playing Saban ball.

Too bad we werent the ones playing Florida football instead of LSU w Brady. A decade wasted with three ball control/time of possession coaches.

Look us up Nationally. Look up 3rd and 4th Down D? Defense against the pass? NO we SUCK. THIS SEASON.

Now on top of that look how many teams barley dressed a team... UK, TN, Vandy, LSU (54)?

There is NO excuse.
