what reputable source has said this? I’ve read that what you just typed is not the case. Dan’s DC of his own choice is making nearly 2 million dollars per year. He’s choosing to employ Knox, Hevesy, Gonzo, Grantham, and had English on his staff for 3 seasons.
Dan shouldn’t be blaming anyone. It’s known that he doesn’t like to recruit. That’s our main issue.
No one has to say anything. It’s in plain sight. To be clear, this doesn’t absolve Mullen from his role in things. The Grantham aspect is a perfect example of his own mistakes, for which I’ve said he’ll have to answer. But it’s not opinion that Alabama, uga and Clemson(among others) are operating completely differently than we are. As Law and ‘78 said, we are still talking of building something that we promised in 2015. Some of those places are building an entirely new one for a second time. Clemson has a lazy river for their athletes. We have shared volleyball courts. They have what look like 4* hotel dorms. Ours look like you expect to see Fastow or Martha Stewart in the background. These are just basic facts. Even a great recruiter like Fisher got tired of the resistance of the nole admin, which at least made sense given their busted suitcase finances. But we don’t have that problem and haven’t for decades. It may seem like nothing to us, but it is to these recruits who we’re relying on to get us to the next level.
In addition, from a staffing standpoint, yes we have some very average guys. But as I said, Mullen himself was a fallback. So why would his staff also not carry some of those characteristics? Charlie Strong—a career DC with 2 NC rings— is an analyst in Tuscaloosa. An analyst.
Ask yourself why a guy like Frost didn’t jump the moment we called. This isn’t Texas or Penn State where he’d have to move entirely either way. We were less than two hours away. The easiest excuse in the world would be to say my family has made Fl home. Recruiting footprint, style and caliber of players to run his system, etc. Its obvious to me that more than just the Nebraska draw, he clearly saw concerns at UF. Same with Kelly. A decade earlier, two decades earlier, that doesn’t happen. The problem is we simply never adapted and arrogantly ran our same failed business model because “this worked before”.
Again, could the right staff make it work, yes. I think Mullen and Co have actually done a little better than expected, in multiple areas. But as t-Gator alluded to, it’s somewhat a chicken/egg situation. But even when we were running cfb, and the Alabama of that 4 year span, we still never capitalized at the highest level and mad the most of it. So again, while I don’t think DM has zero hand in this, he, the last guy, and the next guy will have their hands tied.
