I understand why some want Mullen to stay, but considering how this team ultimately underperformed this season due to several bad coaching decisions, I'm not going to be sad to see Mullen go if he takes another job this year or gets fired in a year or two. My problem with him is that after he does something really dumb, he tries to justify it and make excuses for it.

This team had the potential and opportunity to be undefeated going to Atlanta, while being a lock for the CFP and the Heisman regardless if they win or lose (i.e., Notre Dame). But we all know how that played out. If Mullen had made better coaching/recruiting decisions in the past, we would have been in a better position to actually outright win the CFP. But it's also worth noting that if Franks never gets injured, we're probably an 8-9 win team last year and a 6-7 win team with him this year with arguably the best passer in the school's history holding a clipboard.

He's keeping Grantham after the worst defensive season in school history, so the defense will continue to suck, and Trask/Pitts are gone. So we are going to run the ball more with success but likely score less points per game. We're realistically looking at an 8-9 win season, far from a championship contending team that we'd expect from a coach in his fourth year making 6+ million a year. Maybe at year 6 he'll have a team good enough to compete for championships, but it's hard to not think that it'll be another wasted year due to bad coaching decisions based on this year.

He's not our version of Mark Richt cause Richt actually won a conference championship. Mullen is his own type of coach. A guy who will consistently keep a team somewhat relevant with 9-10 win average seasons without winning any championships.

If he does that, he’ll be gone before long. We’ve already seen he can be abrasive with the administration and isn’t overly liked by boosters. But while he’s here, as long as he’s not completely falling on his face, we may as well get behind him and hope he proves us wrong. That’s my mindset. As I’ve said before, I’d much rather be watching an experiment while winning games than what we witnessed the last two hires.

Whether you were ok with Mullen or hated the hire from day 1, his biggest undoings were the loss to a JV LSU squad (and his laissez faire approach) and a defense that was record-setting in inefficiency and ineptitude. The latter couldn’t be hidden, even with a once in a lifetime potent offense. Barking for some moral victory consideration after what was a better than expected showing against Bama was nulled by the LSU debacle. The coup de grace was the shellacking in the Cotton Bowl that was punctuated by all the opt outs and Mullen’s deflection and profound lack of outward “give a schit.” Any hope and goodwill he had inspired has been wiped away in the course of these final three games.

I would personally feel some better if he’d own it. His reactions, most very deflecting, gives the appearance that he may lack the fortitude for a championship run as HBC in the SEC or that he has lost interest, not invested anymore. To survive as a head coach at that level of college football, it’s not enough to be a great technical coach (which I think he is to some degree) or recruiter (which I don’t believe he is) or a leader of his staff and players (hard no to the first and losing ground on the second), but you’ve got to be a tough SOS...er, SOB. With the shine being gone from the penny, Mullen is not standing tall to face his detractors, so to speak. He’s not showing the toughness needed and expected. In fact, cut and run is what a lot of people are thinking.

Is there a chance he gets this thing turned? I suppose, but the signs are just not there at this point. While I like that there will be changes in the secondary coaching, the fact that Grantham is still the DC of record is not a good sign. There are changes needing to be made and it looks like they won’t be. Worse is that the administrative arm doesn’t seem to care much either. I guess there’s not much more to be done than to say here’s to hoping that things are going on behind the scenes unbeknownst to us. Until we know otherwise, to hell with this past decade, 2020, and how the new year is starting.

it's year 3, how is this Butters recruits.... Mullen had 3 recruiting classes... so most of this team is his.
The productive players were Butter’s. Next year we see what it’s like playing with a full team of Mullen’s woke roster.

This is what a lot of people are missing. When I hear what a mess Mullen inherited roster wise, I shake my head because of this fact. 9 of 11 offensive starters were Butters recruits. Butters had better defensive recruiting than Mullen and if he didn’t, I’m sure Mullen would start his guys. But wait, there’s more. If Mullen just relied on seniority and not talent, that’s on him as well.

The biggest thing between this years abortion of defense and 2007 is we weren’t starting a majority of upperclassmen including at least 4 players at the school for their 4th year. 2007 gave experience to grow while 2020 gave experience for many just to suck, leave and have a schit ton of new starters 2021. Could they be better? Well, it cannot get worse.

Our record next year is going to be no different whether we have Mullen or Viator or Hammock. 4-8 to 6-6.

We aren’t having a losing record next year. You’re
being absolutely ridiculous . Petrified of the Kentucky wildcats and hapless vols? Wake up and smell the coffee Ox.

A few good bounces for us and I think we can get to 5-7. Hopefully that’s enough and the selection committee throws us a bone. I’d love to get another crack at Fau in the Boca Bowl.

1) Our problems go much deeper than HC. Until the unholy trinity of Foley, Striclin and Fuchs is gone those problems will continue. Fuchs is to blame for allowing Foley to hang around and queer an chance of getting an exceptional AD. Instead we got a baseball first, fund raising clown. So we end up with Stricklin who has at best a laissez faire attitude towards the football program. A football centric AD would have insisted that Grantham be fired if for only the reason that keeping him has lost the fans.

2) We could have won the SEC this year had Mullen have he better sense in hiring DCs. We could have beat both AToM and bammer with a, at the very least, mediocre defense? Heck maybe even LSU though I suspect Mullen would have figured out how to lose that anyway. Not that any of that matters. This year was lightning in a bottle and given our shortcomings in recruiting undoubtedly it would never be repeated. But at least we coulda-been-a-contenduh for one season. Not to mention have another Heisman statue.

3) re: The Cotton Bowl. We lost because of all the opt outs. That's not an excuse that's a fact. But the blame still lays on Mullen for not inspiring, cajoling or downright lying to keep the players. Saban has built enough respect that he doesn't have such a mass exodus. Hell, even Kirby managed to keep a few 1st rounders around to play in the past. That's on Mullen

3) Mullen has lost the fan base. Mostly by keeping Grantham but finally by flirting with the NFL. Mullen has checked out and so have all but the most pumperish of pumpers.

Mullen is gone in a year or two one way or the other. I don't have any faith that Stricklin will hire anybody better. And yes, we can end up with worse. Whoever is next will have to be somebody with clout, experience and respect just to battle the athletic department for football's fair share. Then he'll have to be able to recruit, hire (and fire) staff, if we're lucky coach, and if we're real lucky know how to manage a ****ing clock. In the mean time we win nothing.

Happy New Year!

So is he gone yet? Did we hire Gruden yet? Asking for a friend who lives in Tennessee.

Gruden should be available soon, because they are getting ready to fire his sorry ass. He’s a below average coach and always has been. What a scam artist.
