The Future of College Football

We all can tell that the College Football we used to know and love will never be the same. Bowl games aren't the same, team spirit has changed to "i want to go pro", and coaches are making an excess of 5 million a year. The NCAA seems to be headed towards an inevitable demise, and the Conferences and AD's hold more power than the weak entity that is the NCAA. Recruiting is a mess, team talent disparity is undeniable, and the product hasn't been top-quality in years. This is what I think will ultimately happen, the NFL will eventually take over control and make CFB their "minor leagues". The UAA at every big school is a separate entity from the University, so what they can do is pull away from their colleges and form a true "power 5 conference" that has nothing to do with the university, other than the continued use of name and logo. This will allow players to focus on football, and not deal with academics, qualifying, etc. which at that point in their lives, could mean less. Anyone outside of the power 5 conference will be crushed and lose all TV deals, but that will bring quality and disparity to the top programs. Who watches UCF anyways? Again, this will take a lot of time and some workings behind closed doors, but I think we can all agree change is inevitable. Where would you like to see the future of CFB go?

We just watched a team last night doing it the exact way it should be done. Players gave their all. I don't recall any social media spats about social justice, politics or players getting paid. No one talked about the NFL even though it's obvious that they're headed to the league as a high selection. About five guys, all of whom will be first round picks, playing for their teammates, school and doing so out of principle. Not surprisingly, they won a title. The fact that this was done in 2020/21 is remarkable and should be the blueprint for what college football is going forward.

The culture at bama is 2nd to none. Saban not only develops players, he develops great men, how often we hear about players getting in trouble?

Having a minor league has been tried and failed. Without the graduates from these schools supporting them college sports is doomed. Too bad that politics and money is getting in the way, but that is how it will be.

I agree, but I think the college sports model can be adjusted to have a successful minor league. It already practically is. I think the boosters and grads would still support and pay for their teams because they are still the university's team.

If this comes to pass, I will quit watching. If people want a minor league, let them form one. The NFL can support it.

I watch college baseball but don't watch any pro (minor or major).

Who watches minor league baseball? who would watch minor league football? why would the universities maintain an affiliation?
Nobody watches minor league anything, it's more of a power shift if that would happen. The nfl logo would have nothing to do with college sports, or nobody would know it's considered a "minor league" which it already is. Similar to the UAA now, the university would get money for using the name and logo. It's more about the disbandment of the NCAA.

I've said this before in other posts. The universities wont let go of their UAAs. There is too much $$ at play here. I see the P5 conferences ditching the NCAA, creating a football commissioner and conducting themselves like the NFL. Its about putting the best product for TV contracts and maximizing ownership (school) revenues.

Part of me would just like to see all the other Power5 head coaches heads explode if all the Bama players that were on the team this year were to come back for one more year since the NCAA declared earlier that they could... :rotfl:

It's funny you say that. Part of me would like to see you eaten by rabid wombats.

Only part of me though.

That's funny. Really. But I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint part of you because as I'm sure you are well aware, wombats are native to Australia and I am not planning on going there any time in the next, oh, 50 years or so...;)

Last night's winning team is a re-incarnation of the Gator Basketball 04s. They loved their team and played to win.

as a side note, they get paid better in bammer than in the NFL

I agree, and would add that they did it with a high-powered, exciting offense, too. The emphasis on offense the last few years has been one positive shift (among many negative ones) in college football.

I agree with all of this however the problem is that there is only one Alabama and 120 wannabes.
The main reason for the cooperative and committed effort is the fact that most every player knows he’s expendable

Nobody else is able to recreate the culture without shortcuts that either destroy the actual culture or expedite the end of the shelf life for a program trying to be Alabama.

A perfect example is UF where Urban “appeared “ to be creating a similar culture only to have the real core manifest itself as soon as the building starts to crack.
Move forward 10 years and you have a Urban imposter so desperate to win that he can’t even begin to build a modicum of loyalty or commitment to the team, the school, or the program. We are left with players making videos about team and brotherhood while abandoning the team in the spotlight.

I am old enough to remember when the culture you described would fit most college programs but that era is gone forever.

Nothing’s going to change. The money is too good. It’s going to keep growing as you see it so you might as well jump on board and watch the evolution of it. The product on the field is the best it has ever been. There are a few rules that have moved the game towards a way I would not prefer (targeting for one), but overall the game has gotten sophisticated.
Embrace it!

Agreed. Its on a downward spiral. You call it an inevitable demise. Probably.

No one plays defense anymore. Its just not the same.

Alabama is like a minor league system for the nfl.

Wombats are a big problem in our neighborhood. I always wear a white baseball cap when I go out. They deter wombats, white baseball caps do. I haven't been attacked once.
