Interesting, where was that?
Which Republic?
Uzbekistan. I lived in Tashkent, the capital.
Based in Cyprus, the Dutch company I worked for was a consulting company. Basically, we assisted Western, mostly European companies, to transact business in the country. Our biggest contracts were assisting a French company to import cisterns of alcohol to a state agency that then distilled it into the most undrinkable vodka and cognac I've ever been forced to drink and agricultural consulting where we assisted with the import of fully functional, 60 hectare Dutch potato farms including seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, machinery and Dutch farmers to assist the locals. We did a lot of smaller stuff - importing mostly - and we sponsored a Tashkent-based, top division soccer team - but those two state contracts were the biggies. We actually hired goons complete with AKs to accompany the alcohol trains to prevent them from being stolen.
This was easily the most fun job I've ever had. I got to travel all over Europe and the former USSR on someone else's nickel....
