Check with the players' economics professors. Maybe the players are performing blah to get an $ extension? There's a lot of that going around in football.

Gus Malzahn would be the best Tennessee could do at this time. I believe Freeze would take the job but he's not going to be offered because he would be the wrong man to hire when you're facing an NCAA investigation. A lot of Tennessee fans would take Lane Kiffin back, but he's happy in Oxford and there are still a lot of fans that haven't forgotten or forgiven the way he pulled the rug out from under them when he packed top and went to the Left Coast in the middle of the night.

Tennessee needs to hire a proven coach. They are not going to be able to hire an up and comer because of the impending investigation and sanctions. No young coach on a fast track is going to want to take over such a dumpster fire. They need to hire a proven coach not another coordinator like Pruitt with no prior head coaching experience. They don't need to hire another minor league coach like Derek Dooley or Butch Jones. They need to hire a head coach with Power 5 experience. Malzahn even has SEC experience. with a soldi record. He might only be good for 8 - 4 but 8 -4 is what Tennessee needs right now. Tennessee also need stability. He checks a lot of the boxes that Mullen did before we hired Dorky Dan. Man, don't you know Tennessee wished they could have hired Mullen instead of Pruitt. Well here's their chance.

Malzahn might not be the sexy hire but sometimes you need to cut your losses, marry the girl next door, get a job, and quit making dumb mistakes. So instead of taking the Lane Train get on the Gus Bus.

Malzahn or Herman to Tennessee would be bad for us.
Could be. Both coaches are better than Mullen, and they would make Tenn competitive at the very least, which hasn't been the case in years. Hopefully, they both aren't desperate for a job and aren't willing to join a team under fresh NCAA sanctions. Also, I assume Malzahn would like a break from playing Saban every year, so that may help.

This is not an attractive job at all. My guess is that they'll have to settle yet again on their 30th choice.

They are not going to get a top name coach. They are about to get hammered with penalties and their best best is some wild card like Penn St. did with Bill O'Brian to try and stabilize things.
I agree. It's hard to imagine one of those guys stepping into a train wreck like Tennessee. But either one of those guys would have Tennessee pretty competitive.

The best part about this is that they sucked despite paying for players.

We all know Freeze was dirty at Ole Miss, but at least the sonofab!tch beat 'Bama. LSU got a Natty to show for their dirty work last year.

This window licking conehead paid players and couldn't beat Sister Mary's School for the Deaf and Blind.

Alex.
But it is Mullens and UF that have NCAA problems.

Tennessee fans last night: "Welp, all the sports channels are talking about how the NCAA is 'bout to go in dry on our putrid football program, but at least I'll get to watch our #6 ranked basketball team curb stomp the hated Gators to take my mind off of it for a while..."

Florida celebrates rout of No. 6 Tennessee with supersize troll job of Volunteers football controversy

After the Gators demolished the No. 6 Volunteers 75-49 they took to Twitter to release a final score graphic with a three-word caption that read: "We're lovin' it" capped with a smirk emoji. The caption is a not-so-subtle nod to McDonald's slogan after allegations were reported earlier in the day by Dan Patrick that Tennessee's football program was nefariously recruiting by handing recruits cash in McDonald's bags when they visited campus. (Tennessee fired coach Jeremy Pruitt and nine staff members on Monday amid an internal probe into recruiting violations.)

Bill just took the OC job at Bama. While a major step down I doubt he takes UT and faces issues like he did at Penn State. Although he did an outstanding job at Penn State in his 2 years there. I would hate to see him at UT as head coach.

Part of the concern for any potential HC is the roster. Pruitt actually had some okay recruiting classes, but how many of them will be declared ineligible by the NCAA and/or be dismissed? Combine that with likely multi-year scholarship reductions, I don't see how any competent coach takes the job.

My gut says they're settling for Kevin Steele.
