Steele should take it. All that crap happened when he wasn't there. Expectations will be minimal and he has a built in excuse.

Does this push old Alvin over the brink? Someone may need to do a wellness check.

He could also make a play on Scott Frost. I think Steele ends up being the coach in 21, but Frost or Heupel would be a good pull for Tennessee.

Buyouts for both coaches may be an issue, but I imagine Heupel's buyout is cheaper. Still, neither coach may want to go. I can't imagine UT being able to afford to give Frost more money, and Frost probably doesn't want to just jump into another impossible situation that could further mess up his career. If Heupel waits a year or two max, he'll probably receive a much better offer, and I'm guessing he knows that.

But if I'm wrong, then UT would miraculously have their best hire in the last decade. I think Steele gets it cause he'll be one of the few who are willing to take it.

Good points. I agree that Steele will be the coach, at least through 2021. He was a legitimate candidate for the Auburn job. I'm sure there's a lot of young coaches who would love to get that job - even Tee Martin. But any 'young' coach that's 'hot' right now (like Napier, Chadwell, Campbell, etc) aren't going to be interested as they'll get better offers (which is really surprising to say about the UT job, which used to be a premier job).
