Emmitt, along with many of the Greats, didnt just do it on talent. It was hard ass work. Being smart. Taking care of your body. Not partying all the time. They didnt have a water break every 15 min. when he played. We need people like him that walked the walk to speak up. Top 5 in gator history. #1 RB in our history.

It must have been difficult for Emmitt to bite his tongue by not mentioning 3rd and Grantham.

In all fairness, he pretty much called that entire generation soft and extra- sensitive, and he used our defense as an example. But it was also obvious he thought the coaching was atrocious as we all did.

I saw a ton of “soft” on the ‘89 team he played on. That apparently doesn’t count.

Emmitt equating our poor tackling with the social ills of the country is a bit too dramatic for my taste.
I think Emmitt’s point is a good one, and directed at the coaching staff, not so much the players. The young tend to follow culture in all times, and our present time offers weakness of mind, sensitivity, coddling, easily offended, etc. This is the default mental state of Western youth. Those in a position to influence and shape immature young minds can snap them out of this laziness. Nick Saban does this, Urban Meyer is another, and the U.S. Marine Corps. There's evidence that Gator's current staff tends toward the seniority system which is indicative of patronizing behavior which is not the optimal approach for achieving team excellence.
Emmitt: "When we challenge people these days, they all get offended because they’ve been challenged. … They want what the next person has, but they’re not willing to go through what that person went through to get it. People are looking for shortcuts..." Emmitt has this right.

I followed the Gators in '89 as closely as I do now and I can't remember players diving at running backs ankles and being lept over by three feet. Maybe your memory is better than mine but, I doubt it.

Emmitt's right on this one. So much so, we probably need to fire up the "Emmitt needs a statute" thread again.

Those '89 Ole Miss, Auburn and uga games are the quintessential 80's Gators to me, and why every time we wear orange jerseys, I contemplate murdering a puppy.
I do wish the Gators would quietly return to those gigantic shoulder pads of the '80's: Opponents during pre-game warmups: "Dayum...them guys is biiiiiiig!!!"
