Just recently, there has been a newly transformed Mike White on the side court. His responses seem smart-targeted and effective. Has this resulted in no stars going backward in their performances like what happened to stars in the past? The fierce coaching I'm seeing from White, I've not witnessed previously. For White, it's like he got mad about just taking what comes. (Was the cause the extremely terrible blow that was dealt to KJ?) White has newly developed himself probably with the help of this group of players. = credit to coach MW, to MW's recruiting (smart selecting), and credit to all White's young, learning, gelling good-guys >> all credit to the HC in charge now.

This coach, this team, this new style has our fanbase excited. Watching Gator basketball is exciting & fun now. (I've never refused to watch them even in droughts, and always wishing them the best.)

Any of us Mike White criticizers can be won over by the unrelenting development of White and his bball students. Still, like all teams' coaches, White has to persevere by continuing to conquer opposing coaches. With this overall increase in fierceness, even when some team defeats us, we'll get 'em next time. Go Gators. We are being rewarded by this style, by these guys -- all young.

Something I've overlooked = if White continues his knack at excellent recruiting, he & UF bball can sit atop the SEC competition, yearly. Our players have always liked Mike White, so better winning will make them love him, and investigating future recruits will notice that. Like in all cases in all leagues >>> no backsliding. What if Payne catches fire and gets 25% better (and Jitiboh gets 125% better :D)?

Agreed

White is a good recruiter and his players seem to like playing for him. In the office he’s an AD’s dream with his personality and demeanor.

The wrap on him from me and others has been his preparation and in game coaching. I have seen somewhat of a change in him both in playing style but also in game demeanor.

Should he continue to evolve in this way I still believe he can be successful at UF. I just need more than a 4 game stretch before I forget the past 5+ seasons.

Maybe I am slow to turn but that comes from experience versus cynicism.

This is a generic statement= the refs are not allowing defensive players their earned clean blocked shots. Defense is frowned upon. Too many refs are calling charges that aren't, blocking fouls that aren't. Rough play by our opponents is allowed while fouls are called on tough-play by us.
We lose a player for 'awhile' and our inside guys have to play soft >> big change away from playing winning basketball.

Sorry. Mike White can win me over one way and one way only:

Beat Florida State.

Also beating Kentucky on a down year (see this season) or with a double digit lead at home in the second half (see last season) would be nice too.

But for the love of God, beat FSU already.

I'd like to see the team beat FSU, but I have to give them a pass on the December matchup given the Keyontae tragedy. I'd love to see a rematch in post-season play. It would be extra sweet to knock them out of the tourney.

it is quickly becoming apparent that UF is the place to transfer to for a few years to jumpstart a career or get better. We've had good success with transfers since Mike came along.

Exactly Rog

Typical double talk to label our complaints about engagement as cheerleading. As you mentioned White needs to step up his in-game coaching.

I have said this over and over but I will try again.
In the 36 years I sat nearly courtside the thing I learned first was that refs respond directly to the demeanor of the coaches on the sidelines. If you fight for your team, the calls will even out during a game. If you quietly accept their behavior, they will continue throughout the game.

A coach does NOT have to carry on like a lunatic (see Bruce Pearl) but instead isolate specific calls or specific situational calls (block/charge, etc) and light them up when they are missing or misjudging calls. Multiple times during a game with an engaged coach you will see a bad call immediately followed by a ticky tac call, otherwise known as a make up call, to reverse the situation. This rarely happens these days as White never complains.

Maybe I have not been paying attention but I don’t recall ever seeing a cheerleader do anything like what I described.

I haven’t seen any double talk on this topic. We’ve literally discussed what was being said.

I also can’t think of a single poster in at least 2 seasons who is a huge MW fan. Nearly all would like to see someone else in that chair but there are some who acknowledge any success even as they criticize the concerns.

What I’ve said in terms of his overall demeanor is also true when it comes to working the refs. I’ve presented at coaches clinics and I’ve been the Director of Coaches at a large AAU travel program in addition to coaching at multiple levels for decades. I’ve always told coaches to be themselves...whether it’s their team interactions or working the refs. Anything else and you will be seen as a phony.

Ive seen coaches who can never get a call or catch a break with refs....and I’ve seen masters at it. Even with entirely different personalities. Yes I would like to see MW be a little more aggressive....but within the framework of who he is. Others have noted some change in him this season so maybe he is adapting or evolving?

But as I have said multiple times before my concerns have been more centered on in-game adjustments, speed and pace of tempo, closing the door on teams you have down; etc. I don’t think he is near as bad as many here do....I just simply believe we could find an upgrade. But I also don’t believe he is leaving any time soon.

I completely agree with both you. Maybe one of my biggest criticisms of MW is his apparent refusal to treat FSU as a rival to be hated and despised while beating the brakes off them instead of just another non-conference game on the schedule.

That’s nearly enough to be relieved for cause on its own.

I get what you're saying. I really do. And I ALMOST agree with you ...

except for the six losses to FSU, prior to this latest one with the KJ scare. At this point, I'm out of any and all excuses. 7 losses in a row to your bitter rival is unacceptable, regardless of the latest circumstances. It should never have gotten to be this many to begin with.

Excellent win. Still, we only won by 5, nobody was sure we had it won until only there was only one minute left. I'd prefer earlier breakaways. Remember, Vandy was closing late in that game.

Marine, you said it all. Effectively closes the MW discussion.
Closes the MW discussion? Not so fast, my ancient friend.
Our schedule is not easy for the last 9 games, well last 8 really. Unless Coach White has us clicking on all cylinders, I got us going 6-3, at best, and wouldn't be surprised to see us slip to 4-5 to finish the year out. 14-9 would be a gut punch and would likely require us to win at least one in the SEC tourney to ensure a spot in the dance. If we get to that point, the MW discussion will be wide open.

Remaining Schedule:

Wed, Feb 3
vs South Carolina

Sat, Feb 6
@ LSU

Wed, Feb 10
@ 11 Tennessee

Sat, Feb 13
vs Texas A&M

Tue, Feb 16
@ Arkansas

Sat, Feb 20
vs Georgia

Tue, Feb 23
@ Auburn

Sat, Feb 27
@ Kentucky

Wed, Mar 3
vs 18 Missouri

Yep Bart, those coaches with their teams are gonna do their best to bury us. So our season's truth, White's truth lies in front of us.

I don’t disagree with anything you said and I completely agree that he’s improving and that he’s definitely not going anywhere.

My double talk label was in reference to people interpreting our complaints about CMW’s passive sideline demeanor as wanting a cheerleader.

I viewed it as one trying to demean the issue by reducing it to something trivial. If I wanted a cheerleader on the sidelines I would be asking UF to hire one of their beat writers as the basketball coach

We have dazzlers there, normally, and that works well enough for me.

:sigh: I miss going to games.

You are aware, are you not, that the word "cheerleader" was specifically used and expressed as a desirable trait. Furthermore, your over reaction raises questions.

I met Bob Huggins in an airport ten years ago and he was a complete a$$hole.

I mentioned that after hearing Jimmy Dykes say what a great guy he is.
Yeah, I'm just watching the game now and I really have enjoyed Jimmy's commentary in the past. After the first half, I've never watched a more biased commentary. I'm beginning to wonder if Huggy Bear is Jimmy's squeeze. I think this game is going to leave a bad taste in my mouth and I'll have a hard time not remembering this awful commentating whenever I hear Dykes in the future.

Turible.
