I posted this in the box earlier today. @jeeping8r replied to it. So sad. I can’t imagine going through this as a family.

Hurts. Love the guy. Been a Chiefs fan longer than a Gator fan and he did a A LOT for the franchise.
Me being a geologist I have a saying that ‘we all go back to rock eventually’. Marty will be a sturdy one.

It’s hard to imagine CTE not being somehow connected. He played LB several years in the old AFL.

77 is relatively young, but Alzheimer's don't care. He was a solid NFL coach, had a hell of a career.

Possibly the greatest head coach never to go to the Super Bowl. He did great things for multiple franchises and cities.

Marty was a Western Pa guy from about 20 miles SW of the Burgh. Played for Pitt. Also coached and mentored another WPa player, and coach, Bill Cowher.
Cowher would routinely credit Schottenheimer for the opportunity he got to be a head coach.
One of my favorite "Martyisms"was when he would fire up his guys for a big game and say " men if this doesn't light your fire , then the pilot light is out". I used this on my kids a few times, but it worked much better coming from Marty.
RIP Coach.

I never thought of Marty as old or anywhere near it. Very sad to hear of his battle with the incurable disease and his passing.

Football legend. Only coach ever to get fired after going 14-2.
R.I.P.
His last three seasons (with SD) he went 12-4, 9-7, and 14-2 with two division titles and three playoff appearances and never got another HC job. Always wondered about that.
I thought he was treated very unfairly by Dan Snyder. He took over a dysfunctional Redskins team and started out 0-5; they then finished 8-3 over the remainder of the season and barely missed out on the playoffs. After the season was over, Snyder quickly fired him so he could hire SOS.

Marty had finally figured it out and was poised for great things in SD. Unfortunately the Chargers had the most moronic owners and manager, not only firing Marty but letting Brees go as well.

You make a good point: Marty had the misfortune of working for some truly awful owners.
