That was a cook off in St Augustine, they had 3 different judged classes, I entered two of them. The most unique was a beanless red chili but both entries contained venison and pork loin with different spices in each.

If french onion soup is on the menu, I'm compelled to order it.

I order it at least once, a few places have mad bad ones that I can't record. Had the French Onion at TGIF during college, it was the soup with a square piece of cheese on top.

Agree on the "try once" rule, but compelled to "try once!" ;)

I always do as well, have to know if it's good or not... similar to how Alex has to try Cream of Sum Yung Gai at every asian restaurant.

Lobster Bisque at the Backwater Cafe
or a really well done French Onion.
I actually had Lobster Bisque Friday night at an excellent seafood restaurant in Canton Georgia of all places. (Those of you who have been to Canton will understand what I mean.) Have not tried it yet at Backwaters, but since you were right about that place, I'll try it next time I'm there.

Great French Onion cannot be beat, but I have to have about a half of loaf of bread with it.

Mrs G. has been making a potato leek soup for about 25 years now that's very comforting on a cold night.

Not for the reasons in the jokes I’m about to receive, but I would love to go to Thailand.

The beaches, food, mountains: just seems like a great place.
I went to Thailand on a work trip about twenty years ago. When I got back, Mrs G. asked what I thought of the country. I told her it was hot, dirty, and crowded. Being the patient sort, she asked, "OK, what were the good parts?" I responded "I just told you." All kidding aside, it was pretty (though we barely got out of Bangkok), the people were very friendly and the food, including the Tom Yum soup, was amazing. Also some of the women (not the "lady-boys") were among the most pretty I've ever seen. Fair warning if you decide to go: it takes a looooonnnnngggg time to get there. From DC it was 22 hours to get there and 24 to get back (due to a longer layover in Japan).

For me it was 18 hours Tampa to Bangkok, and 22 hours Bangkok to Orlando (due to 4 hour layover in Hong Kong due to issues out of Chicago).

Wife’s making homemade vegetable beef soup tonight since it’s getting so cold (55 degrees).

As some have said, a really good crab bisque is probably at the top. I’m also a fan of two that probably won’t get mentioned.

A great Italian split pea soup is solid. And my wife makes a Dominican Sancocho that’s incredible.

A good homemade vegetable and beef soup is a traditional favorite around our house, I had two aunts that ran school lunchrooms and this was a staple during the cold weather. Soup and a pack of saltines, a peanut butter and honey sandwich, and a homemade cinnamon roll was about as good as it got.
