I agree that Hagler was a part of the best of times for boxing. However, I find it interesting that many have referenced the reason why I stopped following the sport with that being the corruption.

One cannot mention Hagler without mentioning the Leonard robbery. One should never mention Ali without referencing the shenanigans with Spinks that allowed Ali to win the title for a third time. The Roy Jones Jr robbery has also been mentioned.
I just got tired of a sport that was clearly corrupt and many times seemed to have predetermined outcomes.
I believe that this is one of the reasons why interest in the sport has diminished.

RIP Mr Hagler.

DGDad, I bet the extreme popularity of the knockout was tied to taking the contest out of corrupt judges' hands.

There were just so many great fighters back then in so many weight classes. They fought everybody and they fought often. Matches were 15 rounds and rounds 13-15 were the “winning” rounds where legends were made. Rematches were frequent and led to some great trilogy’s.

I loved boxing back then. My brother and I spent the late 80’s and early 90’s hitting Vegas for championship fights. There is simply nothing like fight night at the arena. The electricity is unlike anything else in sports.
Not sure why you gave me a ban rating. Do you think Roy Jones lost fair and square in Korea?

When this happens, you should assume it was a fat-finger error and never mention it. Especially if it is a down rating that makes no sense and isn’t accompanied by a response.

Also, there is an unofficial board rule that posts b!tching about down votes automatically get down voted. I don’t make these rules. I don’t know who does. I don’t know where they’re kept or who keeps them. I just know they exist.

I think Jones beats Hagler if they are both in their prime. Jones was quick like Leonard and punched like Tyson. Not sure Jones would knock him out but would get the decision.

I think Tyson in his prime beats anyone. He was intimidating to the point guys would almost pass out with fear getting into the ring with him. His chin was the best in the business and his power was second to none, AND he could box. Devastating fighter. Once Cus D'mato was gone, his management was done by hang arounds who didn't know squat and failed him miserably.

But back to Hagler. I agree Hagler shouldn't have lost the decision to Leonard. I don't think Leonard lost that fight, he just played keep away and never threatened Hagler. Leonard could not have stood toe to toe with Hagler, but that wasn't his style. Leonard could FIGHT, but he was a boxer. Hagler wasn't in his prime either and had held the belt SEVEN YEARS. That is an eternity in any sport. I think the fight was more a contrast in styles and flash one out over substance. I think the reason the Chavez/Whitaker decision went the way it did was because of Hagler/Leonard.

RIP Marvelous! You were something to watch.

Great points. I would add the loss of Kevin Rooney had a huge impact on Tyson’s downfall. Everyone knows of Tyson’s power but as you said he was also a great boxer early in his career. After Rooney left Mike became very mechanical and always chasing the one big shot. In his prime he put punches together and had great head movement.
