Glad it’s being played despite the Cancel Everything Georgia movement that is Woke focus of the moment. Good to see the patrons, even if it is limited. The real tournament starts today with several big names having been culled (DJ, Rory, etc.), due in part to the dry greens in the first round.

So the question is, who ya got? Rose’s first round 65 was impressive given the conditions and his recent return from a brief hiatus.Thomas and Spieth are in a good position and most certainly will be crowd favorites. The Zalatoris kid is impressive, but it’s a big burden to maintain his stellar play when the weight of expectations becomes pitted against a lack of Masters (and professional) experience.

At the risk of summoning the ire of my Gator contemporaries, I’d like to see Brian Harman continue to contend and eventually win. Though he’s a Georgia grad, I had the pleasure of watching him play in high school during a stint as the golf coach at our high school. We played in a tournament in Moultrie and Harman, along with his team from Glynn Academy (St. Simons), wound up winning the event. Harman was the medalist and clearly the best golfer. Even more impressive was that a storm blew through the night before and dumped several inches of rain on the course and play started with high winds and temperatures in the 40’s. Harman shot a 66 and was the only golfer under par. Pretty remarkable. He was also a very gracious victor. I couldn’t help but be impressed and he remains a golfer that I enjoy watching.

A related humorous story was that I was a veteran football coach, but brand new to coaching golf and I really wanted to develop our team beyond a bunch of South Georgia hackers and into a team that could compete with the best. I figured that I needed to get a little advice from some of the better golf coaches and Harman’s coach at Glynn Academy, Terry Tuley, was among the best, having won multiple state championships. I found him by himself at the beginning of the tournament and introduced myself and asked if he had any advice to share. He was very polite, but told me his secret was having a bunch of kids whose parents were super rich and sent them to Texas (Golf Digest’s instructors) to hone their skills. His biggest job, as told to him by the golf booster president when he was hired was to get them to and from the tournaments safely, see that they are fed, and above all, don’t F with their swings! I enjoyed my years coaching golf and used his advice, but never quite enjoyed a similar level of success.

I’m looking forward to these last two rounds and the Masters is by far my favorite tournament, though I really enjoy the Players and have attended several times. Nicklaus, who was my favorite golfer and in my opinion the best there ever was (Tiger’s a close second...don’t want Ox and others to suffer too much butt hurt) won 6 green jackets, so it’ll always be a high water mark for me. I think it’s a course that requires more perseverance and skill to win along with the ability to manage pressure.

Been streaming and watching Billy Horschel and Phil Mickelson. Billy has struggled some, narrowly missing some putts, and hit his second short on 13. The ball wound up submerged in Rae’s Creek. No drop for Billy, however. Took off socks and shoes, rolled up his britches legs, busted his @ss climbing down to the ball, and hit a really nice explosion onto the green. Nice par. He’s killing it off the tee, but his approaches just aren’t quite there. Just birdied 16. Always pull for the Gator!

today’s moving day. I’m rooting for Speith. Been in a slump, but won last week in his home state of Texas. When he was on fire a few years back, he seemed to handle it with class.

Kim’s sneaky good though: keep an eye out for him to make a run

I just found it heart-warming to see Gary Player, a notorious South African racist, and Lee Elder, the first black something-or-other, up there together on the tee box hitting the ceremonial first shots, with Jack Nicklaus standing several feet away just in case Player said something off-color to Elder.

So much progress has been made since Tiger Woods first came to Augusta in 1995. Gary Player, who, at the time wasn't trying to hide his racist origins, notoriously tried to turn Tiger Woods away from his first Masters when he arrived. According to people on the scene, Woods was driving down Magnolia Lane toward the course for the first time and wasn't sure if he was in the right place. He saw Gary Player, and not recognizing him, he stopped to ask if he was headed in the right direction. The exchange was reportedly this:

Tiger Woods: "Excuse me, sir, can you tell me if I'm headed in the right direction to get to Augusta National?"

Gary Player (In heavy South African accent): "Oh no ya don't ya Kaffir. You go to the course for the blakes. It's about a 3-iron shot that way, down the road."

Tiger Woods: "Sir, you don't understand, I'm Tiger Woods."

Gary Player, (suddenly impressed): "Well then! That'd surely be a 7-iron shot for you!"

Speith, JT, Finau and Xander are all dangerous, and as well as Kim and Matsuyama.
I like Rosie, but I gotta root for the kid.

Nope. Just watching these days. Seriously, hope the guy has a complete recovery and can play again one day. Pretty gruesome injury sustained in the wreck.

Matsuyama was lights out. It’ll be interesting to see if he can shoot 2-3 under tomorrow and close this thing out. Or will the pressure be too much? I like seeing him play, especially since he’s worked out that long pause at the top of his swing. If he closes it out, I’d love to see him get hopped up on PBR, sake, or whatever his drink of choice is and go all Fyuk Yu (Chappell’s Show - World Series of Dice)...

Matsuyama DFR off the first tee. Schaufele bombs it down the fairway. Rose bogies #1. This is going to be good I think.

Cover, I am a GA grad, Tully’s predecessor Herman Hudson got them to the course, went to the locker room and played gin. Didn’t hurt Davis & Mark Love were on the team, with the Drury brothers, Chip won the US Amateur, Dewitt Weaver whose dad was a tour pro, & John D Paulk whose father was head of golf on Jekyll. Frederica now has Jonathan Byrd’s 8th grade son & another 8th grader leading their team.

Man that’s awesome! Pretty easy to coach talent as long as they aren’t wild men. I knew GA had a great golf history. There was another older guy at Columbus Hardaway that was highly regarded in the high school golf scene whose name escapes me. Seems like maybe Larry Mize came through his program.

Hardaway dominated the state in the late 70s. GA has been near the top for a long time. As the Sea Island Mafia’s kids grow up GA & Fred will be set.

Matsuyama’s 5 up at the turn. Barring a couple of eagles on the back by somebody close, he’ll just need to avoid any big mistakes. Getting past 12 will be the first test.
