I was 8 years old that spring. I knew nothing about racing then, my mother, GOD rest her soul made me sit down and watch the KD.

She was a avid sports fan, especially baseball as her parents worked closely with the Phillies organization during spring training in Clearwater, Fl.. She just had the eye for greatness and saw something early in Secretariat in the Hopeful Stakes.

As he ran I did not understand the effect he had until after the race when it was announce that he had ran each of the preceding 1/4 miles faster than the previous one.

It had been 25 years since Citation had won the Triple Crown in 1948 and many, including her had concluded it could not be done. After this race though she conceded to me that she had just seen the greatest performance by a racehorse in history, as both Sham and Secretariat had broken the track record.

She could have not been more wrong.

Wow if not for the "two steps from hell" song playing in the background I would have had no idea that this was an epic sports event :banghead:. Cool race anyway. Thanks for posting!

Secretariat’s run in the Belmont blew me away too. They could barely back the camera far enough to show any others horses. Aren’t his times still records?

Yes they are. In fact, when having a discussion about the greatest racehorse in history it's easy to begin with him as he set, and still holds the records for each TC races he ran in almost 50 years ago.

Just as he had done in the Derby he broke dead last. I cannot imagine being in the saddle when he decided to make his move, it must have been scary to feel that horse really jump up and go.

To me watching it's almost as though he is correcting a mistake made by the jockey and deciding on his own terms to make something happen.
