What’s your favorite card game?

We had a standing tradition (before covid) that every Thursday night we would go out to dinner with the kids and play card games at the table. It was our own version of Crazy 8’s. It’s quick and easy and can do 2-3 rounds before the food comes out.

During the holidays Seedy’s family would play poker for hours. Start with about 25 people and whittle it down to the winner hours later. He tried to teach us Euchre too but it’s more complicated.

Personal favorite is Blackjack. I used to enjoy Uno, but now as a parent playing with children, it's not as enjoyable when the opponent is down to like two cards and you drop back-to-back "Draw 4's". The emotional swings are tough to watch. It's not like slowing down so they can tag you, or not really guarding them in basketball. Sometimes you have no choice but to wreck their hopes and dreams.

Also really like watching a group of Dominicans playing their modified version of Casino. They go insane and you feel like there may be a vicious stabbing at any point. If you ever get the chance to do so, don't pass it up. Pull up a chair, enjoy, and map out an escape route in advance.

Oh, so you’re saying I’m a bad parent?

Rummy, Gin, Spades, and Blackjack are the games our family enjoys, but our absolute favorite is Uptown Downtown (also know as Up the River, Down the River, and Oh Sh!t).

I try not to judge people. I'm a firm believer that when you go, Reverse card, Reverse card, Draw-4, while calling out a color you know you're opponent doesn't have, you have to live with that.

You’re right. Sometimes you just have to play the cards you’re dealt, whatever the outcome.

I guess it’s the maniacal laughter that makes me the bad parent.

Played a lot of spades in college and hearts occasionally. When I was overseas we were friends with some Aussies who loved to play Canasta. But the game I've always enjoyed the most is one called "Tahimi Tahuga" or just "Tahimi." Everyone I know who knows it learned it by word of mouth as it's not in any card books I've seen and there is very little on the internet. It's a brutally unfair game as it is structured to give an advantage to whoever is winning and really hurt whoever is in last place. It's also somewhat restrictive as you can only play with four players. It's super addictive however.

Spades and Hearts.

We freaking love uno. It is extremely ruthless. We bought a set where you can hand create 4 or 5 custom wild cards. You can make them really mean.
Some of ours:
1) Wild. Trade hands with anyone you want. (really pisses the other person off when it's like a 12 to 2 trade)
2) Wild. Next elbow on the table gets 4 cards
3) Wild. The next uno gets 4 cards

It's technically not a card game, but built like a card game. But Rummikub is another family favorite. The kids can really see creative ways to break up the sequences.

We used to play hearts quite regularly when I was coming along. As a young football coach, the highlight of preseason camp were the games of Gut played from midnight to 3:00 am or so and then in between practice sessions. We’d get some pretty good pots going.

That’s like our version of crazy 8’s.
Jacks reverse the hand
Aces skips a player
2 makes a player pick up 2 cards and you can stack them if you have a 2 - I had to pick up 6 once. My family hates me.

Rummikub is a fun game.

As far as playing cards... as a kid I learned blackjack, multiple forms of Poker, gin rumy, and war.

As a Dad, I play a lot of go fish and Uno with my daughter.. but unlike wuss as Sofla... I don't worry about crushing her spirit, if she can't win... then she loses. She is a mean winner, worse loser. She has gotten my competitive spirit, trash talk and trolling.

Didn't know there were games like Hearts, Spades, Spoons until I was in college.

Well, you have raised her as a Cowboys fan. I'm sure any time she sees a game and the words "Wild Card" involved, she just assumes a loss.

Drinking wise:
  1. Get drunk fast = Three Kings. You just deal around the table with cards face up. 1st King dealt pours, 2nd King dealt drinks as much or as little as they want, 3rd King has to kill it.
  2. Get drunk while drinking beer all night and talking while listening to music = Spades is good for that. Not too much thought, but just enough... and reneging gets easier as people get drunker! ;)
Question for the Spades players. Do you see reneging as:
  1. Cheating, or
  2. An integral, and strategic, part of the game?
