That is great. Explain to me again why we spent well over 100 Million Bux on that side of campus for sports that don't make money or draw flies and I have to stand knee deep in piss in the men's room if I go to a game at that shythole football stadium we play in?

To be honest I like men's baseball and go to games but that new stadium was a waste of money.

I continue to say this, but I’ll reiterate it here.

Football, as we know it, is dead. It has a terminal illness, and while some will be able to keep it on life support longer than others, the sport itself is too violent for today’s society, and CTE, the pending lawsuits, and the lack of youth participation all make me think it’s got a decade left, at the most.

This can be the only thought process going through an AD office that would perpetually slow-play investment in the primary money maker, and make the vast investments in 2nd tier, in-the-red sports.

We will slow play this and squeeze as much revenue as possible for as long as possible, but I am convinced that the long term strategy is to attempt to build an athletics program that can somehow sustain itself without football.

Everything was "done-in" by Dems + COVID. Also, football is about our most struggling sport right now. Nobody seems to like or believe in Mullen.

Wouldn't be a true celebration of our softball championship without whining about football and Dems. It's just the organic, natural Segway that any sane person would make, so it's inevitable that it happens in the first page of almost every thread.

Congrats lady gators!

Youre way overthinking this.

They are just slumlords. And too ****ing cheap to compete in football, plain and simple.

As bad as the football facilities are, all the other sports are far worse. Slumlord #1 never invested in them either and at least football was remodeled in 81 or so.

Yes, they think the All Sports trophy means something even though 99% even of the sports world has never heard of it. Nor does anyone care that we regulalrly finish 2nd or 3rd.

It takes quiet an imagination to think that baseball, softball etc are less dead than football.

CTE is already a thing of the past. Plaintiff attorneys run from carcass to carcass like hyenas, then off to the next. There are more head injuries with a few other sports anyway.

As for it being dead? Maybe in Californirado. But it always was. You cant seriously believe there is more interest and ernrollment in softball, baseball, lacrosse, foot hockey or whatever than football.

My post, my fault on ignoring our Lady Gators' fine win - their continued step towards their ultimate NC goal.?
I lost track that the thread was not about football. Anyway, I've watched every Lady Gators game I could catch televised. They reward us fans beyond our other UF teams. So I did "soil" this softball celebration thread. That attitude is not my mindset - I tripped up. I will be watching our ranked Lady Gators every chance I get. They have earned our utmost loyalty. Besides, it's easy watching winning ball, winning players. So accept me back into the fold and know as you all watch & cheer, I am in there with y'all and with our Lady Gators.

the lack of youth participation all make me think it’s got a decade left, at the most.

Four years ago we would have agreed on this, but I've seen that trend reverse in the last four years - and it seem to be accelerating. If I had to guess football has become the counter-culture - and the energy is always with the counter-culture. With COVID raging we played and had to turn kids away because our roster was full - for the first time in three years. I'm coaching a pee-wee team this year. Two weeks after sign ups started, we're full. I've got nearly an entire team of 8-10 years showing up for voluntary pre-seasoning conditioning (mandatory doesn't start until the summer). Yes, it's the south and rural - but it's an area that has historically struggled for numbers due to low population density. I'm telling parents that were slow on the draw to try a team in a neighboring community.

First of all...congratulations to the Lady Gators softball team for earning a share of the regular season title and the top seed in the SEC tournament.

Now, to the other point in this thread:

the lack of youth participation

I've seen that trend reverse in the last four years

Football may be the exception, but overall youth participation has been declining in just about every other sport for several years now. I've seen first hand every day in my PE classes the dramatic changes. Twenty years ago I'd have in any given class a few really good athletes, and a few kids who couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if they were standing on the beach. But most of the class was of average ability, average fitness, and could at least tell me the basic rules and strategies of most games. Now, I've got several kids who play travel ball all year long, specializing in one sport, but are generally pretty athletic. And I've got the rest of the class whose only exercise is their thumbs on their video game controller. The "average" group no longer exists. The majority of students now don't know what hand a baseball glove goes on, can't serve a volleyball over the net if their life depended on it, and couldn't tell me the first thing about how to play any game, unless it's on their xbox.

This makes me sad. And angry.

Softball has been one of the most consistent sports to be at the top since Walton took over. He doesn't accept mediocrity. Great walk off wins and Go Gators!

So you are saying it was only a matter of time before someone shlts on the thread, just a question of who will do the shltting. In other words a "who gives a shlt" thread.

I blame the decline on the trends started by @stephenPE.

He decided that dodgeball promoted ableism and had his class instead sew a unity quilt to deal with their herstory of internalized misogyny. It was all downhill from there.

That sucks man. It's been over a decade now since I worked in a public school environment. I had to coach aggression into the girl's basketball team, but once they got the ball rolling in that regard they moved forward. I wasn't a PE coach (coached the school basketball teams and have coached youth football, baseball and basketball for years) so my sample was always biased by kids who at least had parents interested in sport. That's a sad state of affairs.

I do think that we've minimized competition. It blew my mind when I coached my youngest son's tee-ball team a couple years ago and found out there were no outs. How are kids ever motivated to get better when they don't experience failure? That walk to the bench is instructive. Better run faster or hit it farther next time. But I'm way off topic now, eh?

Good for the girls. The dozens in attendance were wild with excitement. :stirpot:

I didn’t say there is more interest in those, I said that football is waning and the numpties in the AD department are THINKING they need to boost those other sports. Then again, their lack of investment in B-ball reinforces the notion that they actually have zero strategic plan and are just taking a schit in a box and trying to see if they can get advice from it.

Here is some data though....

According to data from the Aspen Institute and the National Federation of State High School Associations(NFHS), from 2008-19 to 2018-19 the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing tackle football fell by more than 620,000, from about 2.5 million to less than 1.9 million. It seems almost certain that 2020 or 2021 will see overall high school participation in tackle football drop to below 1 million players, a level of participation not seen since 1998. Over that same decade season attendance at top-level college games (Football Bowl Subdivision) declined by almost 10% (per school).
