I have the good fortune of taking a 6 week sabbatical starting June 1 in which I plan to disconnect from much of the world, drink boat drinks, smoke cigars, and read books.

While I might read a business book or two, I’d rather just disconnect completely.

Any fiction or nonfiction recommendations? I might re-read the Clancy series, and I don’t think I’ve read the Jack Reacher series, so that’s possible. Also, any good history books lately?

I suppose I shouldn’t have expected mature, intelligent, insightful replies. What was I thinking?

I caught the author (Tom O'Neill) on a Rogan podcast and was intrigued so I bough his book. The book dives into the Tate/LaBianca murders that Manson's followers committed and how the government may have been involved.

I know you were looking for a reading list but I have something even better than reading. We are starting up a new “camp” of sorts for you city folk looking to get away on sabbatical. We will offer up our farm as a retreat. Come play in the dirt and get back to nature. Truly a unique experience to “find yourself” and become one with the environment. You will learn to drive a tractor, use a chainsaw, shoot gophers and chipmunks, identify weeds and plant vegetables. Since I consider you a friend, I will give you and your wife a discount. For $2,000 per person you can spend 6 weeks at our “resort” and live high on the hog*!

What do you say?

*we will feed you bacon

Super easy read with a good moral. Basically an old fart who doesn’t GAF anymore walks out of his old fart home and has adventures.

Almost like Forrest Gump meets Grumpy Old Men.

You know...the Wonder Woman thing.

Seriously, if I was going to have some time to read, I’d go back over some of the WWII books. Anything Ambrose would be a great place to start IMO.

This was an @Detroitgator recommendation a couple of summers ago and well worth the read. Billy Waugh is an American badass.

I'm not much for doing a lot or reading so I don't have any suggestions really. If you happen to be back in the middle-Tennessee area though holler at me. Maybe we can hike to the Walls of Jericho again... I should be home from Hawaii on 30 May but I am to fly out again on 29 June so the window won't be open for long...

Whelp, guess I'm "0 fer 35" on being a man...
I did slightly “better”; I went 1-35. I’ve read “Travels with Charley.” I will pretty much read anything by Steinbeck.
What was interesting to me was how few of the other 34 I had even heard of.
@BNAG8R this reminds me of a couple of “lesser books” from well known authors that I’ll recommend for your list: “The Moon is Down” by Steinbeck and “Undaunted Courage” by Stephen Ambrose.
The first book is very short and an easy read. Verrry different for me from any other work by Steinbeck. The second, if you're unfamiliar, is about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Yeah - I had read one of those (Into the Wild) and it being described as an “inspirational journey” would better be described as “watching the slow motion train wreck of an imbecile who clearly became another Darwinian notch”.

Reading that list, I thought “this is a list of books a lumbersexual out hunting gluten-free salads might read”.
