Gorgeous weekend in the Bluegrass. The ground has dried out enough to start running loads to the back of the farm to the burn pile. @Seedy has been cutting the logs into manageable chunks so together with the kids they can load up the tractor for me. Just need a nice day to burn when some of this has dried out. There’s still so much to do but it’s not going anywhere.

That will be great firewood.

Years ago my neighbor had a black root cherry tree that came down in a storm and landed mostly in my yard. (The leaves on the top most branches just barely brushed my house.). As it was his tree he paid to have it removed. At my request the tree surgeon cut it into reasonably sized logs which I split one fall afternoon. Was great firewood for several winters.

Another one of our water maples bites the dust! It had a big rotten section at the base. A neighbor was having someone cut their trees so we hired him to drop it for us last night. Seedy has to cut it into manageable sections to take it to the burn pile. Water maple is not desirable but who knows in this lumber shortage!

Anyone want to come get it?

Did you happen to notice the Cc rating of his Stihl? Looks like at least a 36" bar on it...

That picture was from my kitchen window. They didn’t look like they needed my help so I never talked to him.

As a consulting arborist I have limited personal experience in using chain saws BUT I have worked with several tree service companies in Ocala and Marion County. All of these companies large and small use Stihl chain saws with few exceptions in which cases they use Husky. A few contractors prefer Husky but use Stihl because of the local parts and service providers.

The company I have been working with for the past 7 years has 20+ saws which are all Stihl although a few of the arborists prefer Husky for certain types of work. These are professional arborists with extensive training and experience and are from different regions of the country. Husky's are said to have higher power, rpm's, torque and on-demand power response . Under certain circumstances the Stihl has a tendency to bog down when you pull the trigger but the Husky tends to have a more immediate response under the same circumstances. I heard the same analogy several years ago regarding heavy equipment comparisons between Caterpillar and Komatsu. Caterpillar tends to bog down a bit and Komatsu tends to have a better on-demand power response.

Conclusions: (1) Husky and Stihl are the best. (2) Every manufacturer makes a lemon now and then. (3) The professional models are better than the bottom of the line models. (4) Buy whichever brand has the best parts and service availability in your area.

$500 to drop it and leave it
We’ve paid $1000 on the past but it was closer to a deck and the house.

That's not bad. My neighbor had a tree fall on his house, he called USAA and because it was a Sunday, they paid the 'weekend rate' (or whatever it's called) and it cost $9000! Oooof! I had a tree come down in my back yard (in Arlington) from my neighbor's yard a few years ago. We split the deductible ($500/each) and the job cost about $3k.

I’ve wondered why insurance doesn’t help with the cost of tree removal before it falls if a structure is in jeopardy.

Why should they? They would be spending money they wouldn't necessarily have to because if a storm causes the tree to fall it could just as easily fall away from the structure. If that's the case then they have no expense.

Spent the week relocating the tree from the front yard to the backyard.

Perfect day to burn after a morning rain and the pile went up hot and fast.

Anyone wanting to see some in-depth chainsaw discussion needs to look up Cotontop3 on YouTube. Guy was/is part of his family’s logging company who went out on his own recently doing custom residential tree work. He uses both Stihl and Husqvarna in different applications, usually Stihl on the ground and Husky up in the tree. Has a ton of information on maintenance, chain sharpening etc.

The guy that cut down our massive tree came out to grind the stump. He had given us a price months ago but then acted shocked that this was the stump we wanted ground. It’s too big for his equipment and he can’t do it. It was bizarre. Seedy was pissed to say the least.

Seedy opened up a section of the stump with the chainsaw to create airflow like a pipe stove and burned it today. It will take a while but we will get there. It was pretty cool to watch.
