Gators first hitter, first pitch, hits it a mile out of the park - bad baseball on Sully's part to let this guy hit a home run on the very first pitch of the game and not work the count to get on the base and manufacture a run. Next few hitters, walk, fly out, walk, fly out, RBI single with 2 outs- there is the manufactured run that we moan about. Fly out to deep right field gap to end the inning. Gators up 2-0 but feels like a loss and early exit from SECT?
Was that by the same guy that couldn't get in the lineup for most of year?

Not saying you guys are wrong, but this catcher is a disappointment. Cost Mace when he set up off the plate and Mace didn't get the call. But holding on to the mask and failing to make the one hand catch takes the cake. First thing a catcher is taught is to get the mask safely out of the way. Smh.

Or keep it on.
But one or the other.

3 run lead going into the 9th inning. Left a bunch of runs on base in the bottom of the 8th.

Has the instruction changed? Back in the day, it wasn't a question. Get rid of the mask so that you can find and see the pop up.
I've seen it taught ways. My sons travel coach was a catcher and likes for them to keep it on. His position is that A) getting rid of the mask is a distraction and that you should be able to find the ball with the mask on and he saw a guy break his ankle after he stepped on his mask on a foul ball.

I say whatever the kid is comfortable with.

Gators win 4 to 1.

Gave up 11 hits, only generated 5. That gets you beat most of the time.

Tripping on the mask is a concern; you are taught to give it a good heave. Thanks for the alert; I will be watching for catchers who keep the mask on.

Pitchers came in clutch today in some high pressure situations. Hitting has been ice cold for about 5 games in a row now. Not the time of season you want to see that.

we are in the double elimination, but the cats 11 hits to our 5 is a concern. Worse is 12 lobs and an overall batting average of .167.. We need hits against msst. Fabian has got to get out of his hiiting slump. The Gators also need to play fundamental defense. Acton's over the back throw for the out at second could have been a double play. None of this showboat stuff will work tomorrow. .I know the cats always give the Gators a tough matchup, but a hit or two may have made this an embarrassing outing for the cats, instead it was drama for the Gators!

Compared to Hickey as a catcher, Guscette looks like Johnny Bench. But you are correct we are team that does not have 1 below average catcher. I believe this guy still has eligibility remaining:

Well we are consistent game by game with double digits in 2 categories: K's and LOB's. 2 stats where double digits is a bad thing.

First of all, this season has been really disappointing thus far.

But, there are 8 teams that go to the CWS which means PAR is winning it once every 8 times you go... You bring up him being there 7 times and only winning once like that is some horrible stat.

I know we are all about firing Sully right now but I think it's way too soon to be talking about that...

Our program is still considered the top 1 or 2 right now (Vandy probably the other) and that is due to Sullivan.

Can one of our resident baseball experts post all coaches they think has a better resume than Sully's? I bet there aren't more than 2 or 3. So if we are firing him, it needs to be with the assurance that we get one of these 2 or 3 coaches.

I'm not saying it's impossible to fire him I just think it's really early considering there have only been 2 seasons (soon to be 3, I know) that have gone by without us winning a National Championship.

At the end of this year, we will still have won 1 National Championship and 2 SEC championships in 4 seasons. Who is going to want to work here when they think that's unacceptable?

I am a baseball expert, and the thought of getting rid of Sully is the most ludicrous idea, thats why I stay out of the thread that I created. I know a team in Louisiana that has eyes on Sully (with much more history than UF) and would offer the farm for him. We should be very careful who we run off.
Of course most folks cant see through their football glasses, which have been mediocre if not broken for years. Just speaking the truth.

I have been very critical of the program THIS year. I haven't posted anywhere that we should "get rid" of Coach O'Sullivan. But I have called attention, and I think rightfully so, to some glaring problems with this current roster. Without going into all details I'll just say this. So far, we are last in the SEC in defense, mediocre on the mound, and less than mediocre at the plate. We are damn near dead last on the bases with running and and have no ability seemingly to play anything other than power baseball. It's disappointing to watch with all the supposed talent on the roster and it's even more difficult when you see your team constantly taunted by the opposition (like striking out your 1st round MLB pick and yelling at him to go sit down) without so much as a stare down from anyone on the team. My son's 16u team would have been out of the dugout in two seconds..right or wrong..they will fight for one another. Its was difficult to watch the Arkansas series for those reasons.

I've been told the reason that coaches call pitches from the dugout now is that coaches are under a microscope to produce successful programs and so this in the new norm. Fair enough.. but other, not so great trends are also going to be on them as well. My take on things is this...if you want to play in the MLB UF is as good as it gets as a pathway unless your going to get a ton of money out of HS to play farm ball(Chase Petty). As a huge fan of the game and UF I'd like to see our program live up to those expectations.

Our program is far from a mediocre program. Yes this team has talent and should have 50 wins but they just don't play well together and don't have that IT factor they had last year for whatever reason. We always blame the coaches and that is fair blame but the players have to play better too. I know its more than wins and losses and others look to everything else and the nuances of the game and deep dive into the stats. Some just hate Sully and all the other coaches at UF and that is fine and fair game. We all believe that all our major sports should be the best and top 5 in everything. If we had a mediocre baseball program than we wouldn't go to the CWS 7 out of 10 years. If we had a mediocre football program we would be 7-5 EVERY year. If we had a mediocre basketball program we would only go to the NCAAT once every 6 or 7 years. With that said, ALL of those programs HAVE to be better, there is no doubt about it. Football HAS to win 12 games EVERY year. Basketball HAS to win 24 games and be Sweet 16 EVERY year. Baseball actually is very close to CWS every year so they are almost there. As Dz said, we should be quick to run off Sully when he has taken us to heights we have never seen. I get it that when we win its disappointing and feels like a loss but for me I celebrate the wins and look to get better in the losses.
