Knee surgery

Alright against my better sense I'm going to have my knee fixed. It looks from the MRI report to be totally obliterated with 3 different tears and a laundry list of other sh!t that is messed up. I'm having a hard time putting my shoe on and dragging my leg to the point my other hip is starting to bother me. Who here has had major knee surgery done and what should I expect? How long will I be laid up?
Now bear in mind I ask about this part(being laid up) because I will be stuck at home with my MIL for whatever period of time that may be and honestly I would have had this done several years ago if I didn't keep having nightmares about this scene from Misery...

I have never had knee or hip surgery, but worked in orthopaedics over 40 years. Make sure you have a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in knee surgery....replacement? The most important part is the physical therapy rehab postop. You should be getting around pretty well within a few weeks. 'Course some of this depends upon your age and general health status. We had an 80 year old lady who was a former professional dancer who had a total knee replacement and within a little over a week came in the office & was ambulating quite well with no pain. Find out how many cases the doctor has done and ask if he has some patients he operated on that you could contact. Google the doctor's resume & where he received his training & check for any malpractice suits. A good tough Gator fan should be able to handle this well. Good luck and hope all turns out great.

I had a total knee replacement. I was getting around pretty well in a couple weeks. It's kind of a funny rehab, the more you push yourself through the pain (and it is very painful) the faster you heal. Daytonacane was spot on with her advice.

Any idea of the cost? I've got one of those 80/20 insurance plans that's supposed to be 7k max annually.
Any ideas about safe and sealed food and water supply until I can get up and make my own? I've got plenty of ammo stored next to the bed btw.... :lol2:

Good to know. I've got a swimming pool which would seem like a good way to rehab(walking around in it).

Partial tears of the meniscus and acl...posterior horn? Any idea if this is repairable? I'm 57 in August and generally in decent shape(I've taken up lifting weights again because my Airdyne bike became too painful a month or so back) It wouldn't hurt me to lose 20# or so though and I naturally a big guy, 6'3" 255#....not sure if that makes much difference?
BTW I've been looking at a guy Tom Winters here locally in Orlando. I've heard 2 other people mention him that have had knee surgery.

This is where those gay neighbors may come in handy. They're known for being very hospitable people in general. I'm sure they won't mind lending you a hand until you're back up and running.

Ya know I wanted to have this done outpatient(cost) but the more I think about it a hospital stay of 3 or 4 weeks might not be a bad idea....

Listen to your rehab person and do the exercises she/he prescribes, ie make a plan with them. Then do MORE.

I only half-heartedly laugh here. I played a lot of sports as well as surfed, skateboarded, etc. as a youth and all those things are starting to hurt. I know I'm staring down the barrel of possibly several surgeries over the next few decades. Even now, when I run, I get tremendous "shin splints" that I've been told are probably more my knees basically giving me the finger for years of abuse and it's just manifesting itself a little lower in my leg.

That's the way it started with me...25 years ago. Believe it or not exercising will make it feel better until you get to the point I'm at. I played full court pick up BB on concrete courts for years along with surfing, skateboarding, riding motocross until I was in my early 40's and have been a pretty avid runner(treadmill/cardio) and lifted weights since then...The funny part is whenever I stopped the knee pain would get worse so I'd start up an exercise routine again and it would feel better until recently. Now if I work in the yard for an hour or so I'm nearly crippled.

I would assume any time you have a major surgery you can expect to pay the maximum out of pocket for the year on your insurance. In other words, the cost is 7K.

Ask your wife for an early allowance.

Why would I assume that it's a major surgery? I thought maybe they could just re attach the torn ligaments, clean up some bone spurs sew it back up and be done for a few grand? I can do the rehab myself(my chiropractor is a ph therapist)

Probably best for him to lay low with the wife for now. I wouldn't mention the money. Don't forget, for the next few months she will be the one having to make those trips to the bank, Staples and Chipotle, on top of already running a top flight mortgage outfit.

We often overlook the collateral damage that's inflicted on others in situations like this.

Ok I'll set the appointment for Monday....trust me no one that I've ever met can take the amount of pain that I can and my left hip is starting to pop out of it's socket from leaning on it constantly....the MRI report even noted "this guy should be in a wheelchair"...
