My wife and I watched her in the Olympic qualifier a few weeks ago, and it was obvious then she was choking under the pressure of being the "GOAT." We both predicted that she was going to be a bust, and Biles knew it too, which is why she quit.

Honestly, I think she did the right thing by quitting. If she would have continued, Team USA wouldn't have medaled. Her biggest mistake was boarding the plane to Tokyo. If she was never there, USA would have had a better chance for gold.

Ultimately, she is a great athlete and gymnast. But she's not a true competitor. The true greats thrive under pressure and embrace competition. She proved to the world that she is not the greatest of all time.

I assume a back up gymnast was allowed to take her place, right? Or were they forced to compete short handed?

She takes Ritalin for ADHD which is banned in Japan and other athletes can not take without a medical exemption. I’m not sure if she was allowed to bring any of the drug with her to Tokyo or not. If she looks like a different person in the individual finals, then it means she was allowed to bring some of the drug and saved it for the individual events. She was allowed to bring Ritalin into Brazil for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

They were delayed from the time they were supposed to compete at by like 5-6 hours. An Adderall tablet for ADD will typically last about 5-6 hours and she'd probably be taking one tablet first thing in the morning then another 6 hours later.

So the schedule delay probably messed with her medication timing and she was probably coming down, maybe a bit jittery/swimmy/wobbly feeling. She'd probably want to time it to be between hour +1 and +4 when she was competing.

If your head isn't in it, and you know it,, you give someone else on the team a chance to get a good score, she knew she would blow it and get a lousy score, she put the team above her own ego.

Interesting information on her medication.

I might have a different opinion than most.

She did the right thing because this issue could have injured her more if she just "pushed through". Now it was idiotic to think it would be going away in a few days unless as someone posted medication made it go away.

The deeper issue in my view is how individuals are effected by the exportations of the media etc. For me I decide what my capabilities are, what my goals are and how much I will put into meeting them. I might come up short for a variety of reasons, but pressure from others should not be a factor except as I decide it should be.

A lot of our issues are related to people who can't or won't have a decent self image.

I have a hobby of reading Dear Abby and am appalled at the fools that write for advice when the proper course of action is obvious. I also note that Abby has massive bias in her advice by gender, what would be considered very bad if done by a male is OK if done by a female.

You’ve obviously never seen J dance. He’s terrific.

Unfortunitely, I have seen J dance... and much like super bowl 52 I have had to burn it from my memory.

As for Briles, not only do I tend to agree that these “sports” are way too subjective, I also think in this case the uproar is almost directly tied to this newfound insistence on calling everything and everyone the GOAT. It used to be a cool acronym and mean something. When it makes its way into flavor of Pop Tarts discussions, it’s considerably watered down and silly. As the opening few posts pointed out, it’s definitely a signal of the weakness of today’s generation. But I think a major part of this story is the determination to shower her and other athletes—often along a consistent line—with accolades and this pressure, way beyond what is probably justified. In general, I don’t know exactly what she was dealing with, so I’m not going to pound in her. On the other hand, there’s no denying it’s not a good look and definitely stains her legacy. But that’s for her to just own and live with.

Agree, on the GOAT discussion, which is why similar to what I said in the LeBron James discussion a few years ago, no one should be called or considered a GOAT until their book is written in the sport.

I also feel like I need to be honest here since we’re discussing her legacy. I’m not sure I’d ever heard of her until like a month ago.

Much like Foles in the Super Bowl that shall not be named, Biles was amazing in the 2016 games. But other than that, I would have no idea who she was.

A gymnast had 10 minutes to warm up for the next event, and she was solid. The team had enough to win without Biles. They lost on their own mistakes.

They started off behind because Biles did poorly on the vault. Plus, two girls had to do routines without the benefit of a practice session earlier that day. That's why I think Biles cost them the gold just by showing up. It's actually impressive that the girls maintained second place.

I had a daughter in gymnastics for a while. All I have to say about it is if your head aint in the right spot you can get seriously F'd up. I totally understand what she did.

I agree with you on the safety aspect. But part of being the GOAT is performing under pressure. So safety yes, but stop all this GOAT conversation.

Don't disagree with Biles doing poorly on the vault. The Mrs said she looks like she is drunk the way her eyes were after the vault. But lets also not forget that the ROC had two straight point faults on the pummel horse (spelling). USA was in the running up until Jordan landed on her ass on the floor exercise. I think if Biles felt she was off during the warm ups before the finals she should have pulled herself out. The other girls were more talented than the press gave them credit, because all the press was on Biles.

Most black people quit if they don't think they can win. We see it in life everyday. Must be a cultural thing.
This is the type of honest, meat-'n-potatas analysis we've all been waiting for. Thank you, alcoholica. I, for one, am tired of all the latent racists on this board. Let's turn 'latent' into 'blatant.' While we're at it let's revive the lost sciences of eugenics and craniometry. Let's make it happen folks.

Yup. And people still pretend like they don't know why these boards have slowed.

I like in the track events/sprints when the favorite knows he's about to get beat he reaches back for his hamstring, "Ooooo....my hammy!"

Most embarrassing one was Michael Johnson in that special one on one event against the 100 meter champ in 1996. Dude got beat out of the blocks, and 50 meters in was grabbing that hamstring..

I think the other possibility(likelihood) here is the odor element of things. I've mentioned before about picking up my sister from her gymnastics class as a child and just being astounded at the pungent smell of feet and sweat pouring from the studio of 20 or so girls. Now times that 300, including some from less hygienically sound areas, and she was probably just dying to get out of there. It wouldn't shock me if she didn't leave and go straight to the nearest Bath & Body Works, camping out for an hour or so.

In any event, what an interesting thread. There seems to be a direct split between those that are more understanding, often with some exposure to gymnastics in their personal lives, and the rest of us are a little less sympathetic. The mere fact that Douglas and I are in agreement should really set the whole conversation in the "rare" column. Then you have J with an almost political take, jeepin getting pummeled for his view and a couple possible line crossing comments her and there. Oh, and of course, neteng. I'm not sure you'll find anyone with a 1950's little girl picture as their av more loved on the board than him. But the guy can't get on the right side of an argument to save his life. It's actually impressive. Anyway, even on day 2 it seems to still be Pasty's thread and we're all just trying to keep up.

The fcking Olympics is suppose to be about PRESSURE!. Damn handling pressure is 50% of it. You are going out in front of millions of people to prove you are the best in the world. If you shy from pressure maybe you should try a different profession.

I agree with you on the safety aspect. But part of being the GOAT is performing under pressure. So safety yes, but stop all this GOAT conversation.

Put me down for this take, too. There are thousands of female gymmers who can do those routines flawlessly in an empty gym. The WHOLE THING that makes a champion in that "sport" is the ability to execute under intense pressure.

They called her the GOAT because she racked up a ton of trophies at international gym meets that few were watching aside from the parents of the competitors (and @TheDouglas78, apparently). On the biggest stage of all, the Olympics, she choked on the vault and then bailed on her team. That's how she'll be remembered. Not as the GOAT.
