that's awesome... it looks like the real deal.
I would assume it is still unsafe to cross the streams, although that would require a second pack.

For the tiny handful of people who care, here's a sound demo, including "overheat" mode. I've got a chunk of money into this pack, and it's still worth a lot more than I have into it. I could sell this pack quickly for at least $2,500.

Even at $3k I think you'd be looking at an easy sale. Great job, Ox. Adding the theme song was a nice touch heh.

That’s a pretty incredible replica! Care to define “chunk of money” and how many hours spent building it? Are the printing materials expensive? $200 for a printer seems really cheap..

Approximately $1400 in materials and 200 hours in labor (although I could build another one a little faster) - that's what you are going to pay for a high-end pack. 3D printing filament only came to around $60. The light and sound kit was $350, then you pay for all the metal knobs and switches, cables, wires, tubing, lenses, Clippard valves (they are real), resistors (also real), decals, the shock mount, the metal V-hook, paint, hardware, the ALICE frame and straps, etc. I never set out to pay that much, but once you're in the middle of the build, you want it to look right.

If you wanted to have a cheaper pack with things like most of the metal parts, resistors, and valves 3D printed, you could probably make one for $600 or so. It's the light and sound kits that are going to be the biggest chunk.

If someone asked me to build one for them like this, I wouldn't do it for less than $2500, and that's actually a good deal.

Very cool. Materials aren’t much but the time investment is pretty intense. I have flown with a few guys with 3D printers that have made everything from mask holders to save strap rash on your ears to coasters for glasses. Nothing like this though

The files to make this pack are free online to download. A $200 printer and a $15 roll of filament are all you need to get started on printing anything.

So $1400 in materials, 200 hours of labor, and sell it for $2500

$1100 gross / 200 = $5.50/hr

That’s not a living wage!

Very cool if you’re into that kind of thing.

I’m not though, because I’m not a nerd.

Great idea! Been working on the new "Afterlife" pack, which is basically a filthy, beat-to-hell pack that the fictional Egon Spengler had added some new things to over the past 3 decades. My first pack I built was pristine, which is my nature - I like to make things gleaming and perfect. For this project, I had to deliberately make a dirty, scraped up piece which had to look like it hadn't been cleaned for 30+ years. It's been a lot of fun. Simulating weathering is like art, in many ways.

Here is an official release of the Afterlife pack:

Here's some of my progress. It's amazing what you can do with a silver paint pen and a dry paint brush. The "dirt" is done by mixing acrylic paints, brushing them on, then wiping most of it off before it dries, leaving filth in all the crevices. The sticker on the bumper below had most of the ink come off when I was "washing" it with the acrylics, and I decided to leave it that way. After all, a sticker in that location would get absolutely beaten to hell just like this. The "weld" around the n-filter is hot glue.

On to some unique Afterlife additions. There are two new switches on the new pack, one under the ion arm that is supposed to be for power, and one under the crank generator for God knows what. Had to fabricate these with very little to go on.

This is just a standard light switch that is chopped up and painted. I designed and printed a plate on my 3D printer for the surround.

On the crank gen, this is a real breaker switch. Again, I designed the plate.

If you look closely at the released photo of the pack, it shows that wires are sticking out of the loom on the tube going into the crank gen. This was fun to replicate.

Here's another unique Afterlife addition - the heat sink on the side of the pack. We only have grainy images of it, but it has some wiring and a chip in the middle of it. I did one and it's close enough for me. The heat sink itself is a file that someone designed and I actually printed it in resin.
