The Little Folks Store was always advertised on WCTV. It always looked cool as I don’t know what! The only time I ever got to go there was when I got to work one week as a Page in the House of Representatives.

My mother worked across the street in the Holland building and on Friday of that week, they let us go at lunch. Since I had to wait for my mother to get off of work, I cashed my check in the Capital and walked to the LFS. There were some great playthings, a lot of models like Diddy referred to, but I couldn’t pull the trigger as the prices were higher than the Dime Store I was accustomed to. Instead, I backtracked to Buddy’s Sporting Goods and bought a new Rawlings First Baseman’s Mitt that I kept through high school.

Those were the good ol’ days!

It was iconic to Tallahassee. Guess it was our version of FAO Swartz store in NY only on a much much smaller scale. I wonder what the history was with the owner. Certainly not the trinkets from China like today.

Favorites as a kid in Detroit...

Peaches Records & Tapes... still have a few of their peach crates somewhere.

J.L. Hudson department store in downtown Detroit, it was magical, especially at Christmas time (think original Macy's). 25 floors (with 5 basement levels). They finally tore it down a few years ago, and I've posted this before, but a millionaire in Detroit saved one elevator and spent a FORTUNE to make it work in his house... even that wood casing on the outside is original, he got it all and an elevator company signed on to make it all work in original fashion. It's crazy to think that as a kid, you could work there for 30 years as an ELEVATOR operator and get a pension. Our neighbor in Detroit worked in the "Men's Shoes" department for 30 years and retired... schit changes...

Anyone remember Turtle’s Music Store? Maybe they were just local to the Tampa area

Instead of gift certificates, they had metal coins that looked like a record with the dollar amount stamped on them. As a kid, those coins were so cool.

Loved this place. Sadly they were no longer a major player when I became old enough to buy concert tickets. I do remember the unique gift cards as my uncle used to get them for me. Most the ones in Atlanta got bought out by Blockbuster when they tried to do their Blockbuster Music thing. The last one I remember was a complete hole in the wall in Milledgeville in the late 90's before it went out of business. At that point they were just selling used stuff.

upload_2021-9-22_15-17-39.jpeg You didn't experience a kids birthday in the 80's unless it was at one of these.

TG&Y. Highland Avenue in Clearwater.

When I got older, in my teens and junior college years, at the corner of US 19 and Gulf To Bay....

We were talking about this in the chatbox yesterday. Although it is technically not a physical store, I think it deserves a shoutout in this thread:

Columbia House

12 CDs for a penny! (followed by a 18 months of ass raping)

Woolworths was another that I have a memory of as a small child.
Woolworths were great; and every one was the same. As singer/songwriter Nancy Griffith once said, they all smell like popcorn and chewing gum rolled around together on the bottom of a leather soled shoe.

Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She made the Woolworth counter shine
And Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer
And they'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime

I saw her once at Wolftrap in NoVa. Her back up band was the National Symphony Orchestra. Great, great show.
