Why couldn’t we stop the same run play?

To the x’s & o’s guys, or those who would torture themselves by rewatching that dumpster fire, why couldn’t we stop the same run play between the tackles the Corndogs kept repeating like reruns of “The Office” on Comedy Central?

I know the answer is that Grantham Sucks. But why did he suck?

You know I think if they had run that same play just 6 or 7 more times and then allowed us 2 weeks to prepare, we might have been able to salvage Leonard Fournette's rushing yardage record in a single game at LSU, but only by a few yards.

The correct question is why does he suck? The answer came in a guy rushing for 4700 yards in one game by running the exact same play over and over and over and over................................................

He did not just suck today he SUX 24/7/365 all day, all night

Bullets only:

1. Grantham

2. Player decisions: we run two DTs (smaller but not as bad as before) and a WDE and an OLB/Rushbacker on the DL.

3. Recruiting: especially at linebacker. we've signed one inside linebacker in the last four classes, Hopper. The other LBs are edge players or safeties that we're trying to put weight on and trying to move them inside (which is a significant technique andnlearning process).

4. Position Coaching: we hired a graduate assistant (and a dwag). So far his resume (only three years) is that he's never put a functional set of linebackers on the field, and he's never developed an edge or safety into a functional inside linebacker.

5. Formation: We call it a 3-4 defense but it is a nickle 4-2 really. Its really rare when the Rush "Linebacker" does anything but line up with his hand in the dirt. Combined with our problem of size and you end up with 320 pound SEC lineman going against a 230 pound Rush End (Cox plays even smaller than his size) and a couple of 220ish pound Linebackers. It's never going to work.

6. Strategy: we purposely assign our lineman usually to one gap assignments, so they can rush the passer without having to first read run and maintain two gap integrity (basically the gap tomtheir left and right) as most defensive lineman especially defensive tackles are required to do. Linebackers then have the primary responsibility for the two open gaps (their are six gaps and only 4 DL).... which of course means the LBs have more trouble flowing/strafing/filling whatever to other locations AND guards are usually left free to climb to the second level and block, usually destroy, our linebackers. Also, playing a nickel corner instead of a third LB makes us very small in the box.

7. See #1.

That's my first answers off the top of my head.

The more detailed explanation would require me to explain what happens when you pull extra blockers and create extra gaps vs a defense. it's too late for that, and frankly I couldn't give you a college level answer anyway.

However, against Kentucky at times and mostly in the second half, we played 4 real DL WITH Moon and Cox at OLB at opposite ends of the formation. Just a good old 4-3. We even brought a safety down, mostly Trey Dean to sceimmage in a "Bear" or 46 look. It mostly worked.

Entirely perfect bullets, just didn’t want to long cat your entire post

They were pulling the LT & LG to the right. Center and RG were down blocking to the left, RG took on Outside creating a huge hole for the TE to come around and take LB and LT & LG get to 2nd level. And as you said, they are blocking 215 lb. defensive players.

It’s a pretty simple scheme that we do a variation of it on my 7 & 8 year olds can execute. Unfortunately our Dwag DC couldn’t figure it out.

Backside DE should be running that down.

One thing I noticed was Cox repeatedly engaging the OT without apparently paying attention to where the ball was going.

Also, Dean was repeatedly either hitting the wrong gap or getting blocked. I kept expecting us to commit to stopping that play & then going over our heads on a deep ball, but we never forced that.

Did Watson ever get in the game? He’s so disruptive, why not try your 400lb plug & have him plow into a couple of OL?

They should not fire Coach O. That team is clearly decimated by injury for the 2nd year in a row yet played so hard & well.

Two things missing on those trap plays. No DL'men stuffing the downblock and no one filling the gap. That's coaching, no matter what size the personel are. Pulling means a mismatch and more blockers than defenders. The D for LSU should have been quite simple. LOAD THE BOX and force them to throw.

Grantham's jaw drops, squints, stares blankly upward...

I don't think he ever saw the field except from the sideline. That is exactly what you do with a trap running team. Put your big nasty in there and have him take the and beat the double team.

Yes they should be crashing down but their line is much better. I don’t think we could move them with our package. They were engaging them very well. As mentioned backside pursuit my have helped. Reminded me of 92 sugar bowl on being just man handled.
