I’m willing to stand up and take responsibility for the state of the program right now. The poor decisions on who plays, keeping Grantham around, the bad in game decisions and the piss poor recruiting. It’s all on me and I’ll step down now or at the end of the season. Whatever they want. All I ask for in return is Mullen’s buyout.

yeah....sure..... it was a joke.
Yeah. I really meant that the TE's coach should be the DC.
We've been through this. Brewster's name was the first I pulled from the list. The point of the original post wasn't Brewster, the point was that the AA has put themselves in a position that only gets worse. Of course this being gatorchatter a stupid post lives for ever. YOU better than anybody knows that.

I would give you that... for a nominal finders fee. :)

Kurt Mattix...that is who I want. On paper looking at statistics his defenses are amazing. 2nd in yards per play last year only behind Iowa, and 3rd in yards per play this year behind UGA and Wisconsin. He's got 6 years of experience as a DC. So he's not totally new to the job. He's also a LB coach. So he could replace Grantham/Robinson. I have no idea if he can recruit, but that is what assistants are for. Give him a promotion and give him a shot for a year. He could be a savant as a DC that saves Mullen's career at UF. That is basically what Mullen needs if he's going to make it at UF in the long run.

Mullen ain’t making it in the long run at this point. He’s peaked and we all know it. He knows it, too.

Why not we do a lateral move = trade UF's staff for MSU's staff. That wouldn't be gain of function in any way.

Mullen dug his own pit and now he's at the bottom of it. It seems that every single common-sense call obvious to the fan base he just can't see. He can't even see the black hole that Fat Todd is. We've seen it so much that at this point who GAF why? He doesn't care about his job or Gator Nation. Hanging onto Mullen has little upside, he is truly a total dumbsh@t and not worth it. We can do better than these two dumbasses. There has to be competent coaches out there looking at this dumpster fire saying I Want That Job!

I've done some digging. Here is the story. When Hoke took over at SDSU in 2008, SDSU was in the dumps. They were bottom of the barrel in the Mountain West. Hoke apparently recruited really well and built that program up to respectability. He was recognized for the rebuild, and that is how he landed at Michigan. When Hoke left for Michigan his DC Rocky Long took over as head coach at SDSU. Rocky Long won the MWC 5 of the next 9 years. Rocky Long retired in 2019, and he left one of the best defenses in the country with him. Hoke replaced Long at SDSU in 2020, and Hoke brought Mattix with him because Mattix had coached under Hoke at Ball State and later at Michigan. So basically you've got one guy in the Hoke coaching tree replacing another. Hoke laid the foundation for a MWC dynasty of sorts in 2008-2009, and things came back full circle in 2020 when Hoke resumed his previous title as head coach at SDSU.

Rocky Long is now the DC for one of his former assistants Danny Gonzalez at University of New Mexico. Rocky Long's DC in 2019, Zach Arnett, took a position at MSU in 2020 with Mike Leach.

So Mattix is pretty much Brady Hoke's protege. He picked up 4 years of experience as a DC at Eastern Kentucky, where he was pretty successful, and then he rejoined Hoke in 2020 at SDSU. So he will have 6 years total of DC experience after this year.

Also yes it seems like Mattix runs a 3-3-5.

Aztecs' vaunted 3-3-5 defense now in the hands of defensive coordinator Kurt Mattix - The San Diego Union-Tribune (sandiegouniontribune.com)
