The misery that is the 2021 Florida football season continued Saturday in Columbia, Missouri as “Steely Dan” Mullen (and this isn’t a Becker and Fagan reference) led the spiraling Gators to their sixth loss in overtime, 24-23, to the lightly-regarded Tigers, who by the way became bowl eligible. Those fond of “moral victories,” which at this point likely includes only Mullen, Stricklin, and Fuchs, can point to an overall statistical advantage by the Gators (total yds, passing yds, time of possession, etc.), but the reality was that Mizzou stuffed our run game and made plays in the second half and at the end to secure the victory.

A telling comparison of the two head coaches could be made at the end of the game and in overtime. After the Tigers’ stellar kicker shoved the potential game-winning FG to the right, the Gators got the ball with a little more than a minute remaining to try and position themselves for a chance to steal it late. Instead, Steely Dan opted to try and run out the clock and take his chances in overtime. Conversely, Coach Drinkwitz went for the victory by successfully going for two after matching the Gators’ initial TD. Simply put, Mullen thought he could win; Drinkwitz knew it.

*Defensively, we probably played well enough to win, with an offense that had a pulse, up until the second half when the Tigers’ RB started gashing us and in OT. We’ve been roundly characterized as a “soft” team that talks more than it walks and that seemed to hold true in the latter stages of the game.

*Offensively, we could not block the Tigers and they pretty much destroyed our running game and kept Emory under pressure. The OL was just a mess. I’m guessing there wasn’t much to dance about in the locker room afterwards.

*Saturdays Down South is reporting that Anthony Richardson has taken down all mention of the Florida Gators from his Twitter profile after Saturday’s loss. Shocker. Not only can Mullen not recruit, but the one high profile guy that he has looks to be cutting ties, something we’ve pretty much known for a while now. “Smartest guy in the room?” Nope. Laziest and most arrogant definitely.

*When Missouri opted to go for two after their quick response overtime touchdown, that should have been the ultimate challenge to bring out our competitive spirit and pride. Instead, it was Missouri’s that came to the forefront and with the exception of Vandy, the Gators plummeted to the bottom of the SEC. It is hard to let that sink in.

*F$U, on the other hand, squeezed out a W on the road against Boston College. Despite my desire to see Mullen, Stricklin, Fuchs, et al in the road, I cannot fathom a loss at home to the Noles. Yet it is looming pretty large right now. In terms of constituent confidence, Steely Dan < Brandon and even Kacklin’ Kamala is poised to throw him in the cellar.

I know I’m not alone when I say that I am beyond ready for this era of Gator football, which mirrors the nation’s political turmoil in my opinion, to end. Gator football has been a lifelong passion and something to be excited about. That is, until this last decade plus and particularly these last two seasons. Nothing short of a house cleaning will pave the way for us to start the climb back. It’s past time. Go Gators!

Good recap Cover.
We know that Mullen is gone and it is only a question of when. He is doing serious damage to the UF brand and AR's twitter revision is only one example. Mullen's termination will only add to the distractions leading up to "Semi Week" but it should happen now. The real question is do we have enough business sense to already have a short list of replacements? The one advantage of Jimmy Sexton being the king of all agents is that one call to him connects our decision makers to just about everyone we would be interested in.
While I firmly believe that we are almost hitting rock bottom, we will recover with the right new hire. The last numbers I saw in 2019 had our football program valued at $635 million , with annual revenues at around $150 million , which was 11th in the Country. You would expect that our leaders would run this operation like the big business that it is. Instead it looks like we have an AD and President who prefer to run the program like the Waldo Flea Market on 301. We can't assume that anyone of any authority in the program knows what the hell to do next.

Turbulents ahead. Buckle up and hold on to your butts.

The next coach is gonna be paid to suffer through some bad seasons with this “cupboard is bare” roster, unless he’s revolutionary in the mold of SOS or CUM. Hence the only priority is securing a great recruiter who brings in great recruiting coaches. Got to win enough to support recruiting, but the next staff may just be teeing it up for their successors. If we’re lucky he’ll insist on a crew of analysts too.

Cover you da man!

Simply put on AR. If Mullen stays, he's gone. New coach, AR starts. EJ never starts again barring injury to AR. EJ probably goes with Mullet to LaTech or somewhere.

You would think Mullen being gone is obvious, but apparently like strick and fuchs there are plenty of useful idiot Gator fans like this

I am not so confident we rid ourselves of this cancer anytime soon. Too much rah rah blindness and/or disinterested wokeness to overcome.

Truth is nothing can Cover the stank.

Mullen is a broken man, his fantasy land of O/D schematically superior systems has been debunked. No whisperer, no genius, just an out of his league vacationer.

So no lost games presser, no Q&A today? He just gets to forget about his responsibility as HC?

I really hope it’s not true that he put nothing into offensive preparation for this game. But would it surprise anyone if the selfish fuch is trying to rank the program to get even with Gators that don’t believe he’s the greatest ever- the ones that don’t believe he is the second coming of Steve Spurrier?

Anyone that thought they were getting a Gator in mullen was terribly mistaken.

Cover 2 thank you once again for providing the world with "breakfast with the Gators". I am fearful with the new coaching search that we will end up with another short term coach.

Well, it looks like Steely Dan’s battery has finally died. It’ll be interesting to hear from Stricklin. It’s hard for me to imagine that he would be able to leverage a suitable replacement. I wouldn’t mind hearing that SOS would at least be a part of the search committee…for the next HBC and/or AD. It’s time to get the players in place that know how to work to put us back together and not bring in another carnival act that’s 50/50 on card tricks and finding a rabbit in their hat.

Now that we have gotten some relief for UF athletics, can we talk about relief from dumb and dumber in DC you mentioned?
