We are either going to have to hire someone with questions marks or some guy we are going to be just as disappointed as the last guy. The coaching pool isn't that special, and the guys that people are happy with are going to make some money in extensions this year.

I personally would like someone experienced as a head coach who can recruit and who already knows how to build and maintain a strong program. I also think Stricklin feels the same way. That would eliminate guys like Johnson and Brady right off the bat.

It would eliminate a lot of guys with high ceilings... and it is how we get guys like Mullen.

Maybe, maybe not. Your “high ceiling” route is how we got guys like Muschamp.

Fully agree, but I would rather swing for greatness, then settle for a double. Swinging, gets you guys like Spurrier and Meyer... but also jabronies like Muschamp and Butters. But hope is a lot more fun than the schit we got the last 4 years, where outside of the Mullenites you knew you would always come up short.

Mullen gets fired and check out my sleep score! That 15 minute restless session I was dreaming about a Kiffin hiring.

But can you imagine your ad revenue once Kiffin’s introductory presser is scheduled?

I’m hoping we hire Leach instead. Just as entertaining and a better coach.
You would have a grand mal seizure if we hired Mike Leach, and you know it.

Half of the board’s population would stroke out, too.

We could do a lot worse than Mike Leach. A LOT worse.

And I think we’re going to.

I agree. I want a CEO mentality. If I were king for a day, my rough cut at the job requirements would be:
  • Ability to organize and administer a medium sized, performance driven organization.
    • Define a vision and purposefully create an identity that survives personnel changes.
    • Enforce accountability at all levels.
  • Ability to recruit talented, energetic subordinates.
    • Have a developmental program in place; succession planning.
  • Must possess overall game and risk management skills..
    • The coordinators do the play by play, he just manages risk. Do we go for it on 4th: Is our defense playing well enough to ride out a lead? Etc.
  • Interact positively with various stakeholders; recruits, players, staff, fans, administration, media, etc.
  • Possess foundational football knowledge in some area (X's and O's).
Notice that X's and O's are the last item on my list. Obviously you could not run a football program without a solid foundation in the technical aspects of football but running the organization and recruiting good people (players and staff) is far more important.

Of course, there’s an underlying issue that this administration is not willing to provide the resources necessary to compete for titles, like schools such as Bama and A&M do. While the HC salary will be fine, the money for staff and assistants will not. This is why we are likely to settle for someone we don’t like.

They didn't when Pell was hired, and he changed the culture.... similar with Spurrier and Meyer... the right head coach will provide the leadership to change expectations and resources... hell even Butters got a full sized practice facility.

As ironic as it may sound, the large TV contracts have created a disincentive to free enterprise. Stricklin views the guaranteed money as justification to evenly distribute among the peripheral sports, never mind the one that butters the bread.

He is a poor CEO, but so was Foley... that is why the right leadership at Head Coach, could be huge.

Coaching firing and hiring are always going to be the biggest hitters... because people love the final of it, and the hope of the next hire.

I mean, I imagine a national championship would probably also generate significant traffic too...
