If you're going to allow a QB to claim he started to slide but then legitimately changed his mind, then you also have to allow for a defender to say, yes I saw him start but I legitimately thought he was going to change his mind and so I blew him up.

It's akin to faking or changing mind in the middle of beginning to signal fair catch. Once you start, that's it. There's no second thought or consideration afforded to defenders, so there shouldn't be for the ball carrier either.

I find it funny that some of the pussification rule changes of late are a direct result of championship Gator play. Who will ever forget Earl Everett running down OSU QB helmetless or Major Wright blowing up the Okie WR on the first series of 2008.

There were sooooo many awesome "helmetless Everett sacking Smith" meme pictures after that game... like on the moon, white water rafting with kids... wish i saved them all.

Maybe if they let football be played like football, instead of pussifying it, there wouldn’t be any need to adjust the rules.

Maybe if they didn't pay 20mil a year to the players who are therefore treated like commodities more fragile than precious china they wouldn't have adjusted the rules. Some of the rules for safety make sense. Compared to thirty years ago you now have human beings 30 pounds heavier and much faster running into each other very similar to repeated car wrecks. Physics tells us that at some point you start to break things. Some rules to compensate make sense. Some don't.

HA! Jokes on you!!! Physics isn't a requirement for Sociology or Recreation Management majors!

I love that in the Earl Everett clip it’s immediately followed by the band playing Gator Bait. Won’t hear that again but forever captured.

Maybe someone can explain the difference in a QB scramble with a fake slide to continue running to plays such as Tebow made famous where he faked like he was running but would pull up and do a jump pass to a WR crossing behind the LBs? Also, like someone else mentioned, pump fake pass to get a different WR open by tricking the DB into changing his direction or momentum...

I don't have a problem with the fake slide personally so I don't understand why people want to whine and cry about it...

A guy can still be tackled faking a pass or run. JFC, you’re not very bright.

You serious Clark?

You don't see the difference between a slide, which is essentially the QB giving himself up to avoid unnecessary contact and a football move? You gonna tell me that RB's making a jump cut or spin move are equivalent to downing themselves next?

You're a special breed of Alabama, aren't you?

Because none of the other examples you provided involve “giving up on the play.”

Defenders must make a split second decision to STOP their attempt to tackle the moment a ball carrier begins the slide, or they face a 15 yd penalty for a late hit, to sometimes include targeting and ejection. The rules are so biased towards the offensive player that allowing this type of “gamesmanship” would further handcuff a defender’s ability to do their job. It’s like allowing the “flop” you see some players make to draw a flag for a personal foul. It is an embarrassing lack of integrity.

I can’t say I’m surprised a bamuh fan would have trouble understanding this concept… until somebody does it to YOUR defense.

Football is a violent sport. It always has been. No player in the game today can say they didn't know that it was a violent sport and the chances that they will get injured playing it. QBs should be held to the same standard as any player that carries the ball. If he has the ball and isn't "down by contact" then he should be fair game. If he wants to fake like he is sliding then continues to run, fine by me. The next time he runs I'd just try to hit him even harder... After all, this ain't flag football we're talking about...

I totally agree with this statement, but the ncaa does NOT. The refs aren’t going to call a game based on Nalt’s opinion, they will go by the rule book.

They coddle the qb with so many rules, I’m surprised you disagree with this latest change. Do you not see that you’re straddling the fence here?

Well they ought to go by my opinion... ;)

Call me a traditionalist I suppose. There used to be honor among athletes to be able to show their scars of battle (or surgery) as proof of how tough they are/were. It seems that lately only the softball players still do that...

One of the great Alex Brown plays in ‘99 was where he absolutely blew up Martin on a play action play. He knew he was handing it off but hit him anyway because he’d faked it earlier. It was flagged but it really shouldn’t have been. You could argue that a defender doesn’t know who has the ball at that point. Either way, TM got de-cleated and it was fun.

Best play was when he caught Martin from behind as Martin was rolling to the student section... We could see the white of Martins eyes from our seats when he realized he had been caught from behind, one of the few times from my seat you saw sheer fear as a dude was being dropped.
