Talent level for next year: Grade it

I wish some people would take a post like this more seriously. My quick thoughts subject to dramatic change after the transfer portal are:

QB: Richardson, DelRio/Kitna B- (There is too little depth and Richardson is too injury prone possibly. I say possibly since who knows how many games he would have been available for this year had the plan not been to live or die with Jones. The transfer from Ohio State if he comes might be a plus.)

RB: Bowman, Lingard, Wright, B (There is some talent here, but I am not sure it matches the run first Napier offense as well as Pierce would have.)

WR: Henderson, Whittemore, et al. A (There is great talent and lots of other candidates to fill out the rotation.)

TE: Elknis, Odom, Zipperer, et al. A (Again plenty of talent and this seems to be an important position for Napier who often plays two.

OL: Braun, Gouraige, Mincey, White, et al. C (White seems good, Couraige solid, the rest I am less sure about. I do believe that OLs are made not recruited so this will be a very interesting position group this year.)

DL: Cox, Dexter, Umanmielen, Watson et al. B+ (A pretty good group of potential starters, some depth but the depth at D-tackle is unproven.

LB: Borders, Hopper, Wingo et al. C- (An ok group but looks like many of the proven guys are gone and the depth is not great.

S: Johnson, Torrence, et al. D (UF has tons of young candidates here. Surely there must be someone who can learn to tackle and can cover a little among them. But I thought the same thing last off season.)

CB: Helm, Marshall, et al. A- (A little depth concern, but very good talent at this key position)

Specialists: Crawshaw, Smack, Underwood, B (Well Crawshaw is a good punter, but had some iffy efforts at key times. The other two are basically unknowns.)

Overall, this is a B or B+ roster if Richardson remains at UF and healthy for a year.

Where am I too tough and where am I grading too easy?

LB Hopper & Wingo are both solid Bs and Miller is between A and B

S You gave Torrence a D? Did you watch any Gator football this year? That guy is a stud and the best safety we have had in years. Johnson has played pretty well. I honestly think that this could be one of our stronger position groups next year.

CB I would say Helm and Marshal are Bs. Marshal had a rough start but improved during the year. I am assuming that Elam goes to the draft (he should IMO).

Specialists C to C- We need a better Field Goal kicker. Some one who can hit 85% plus inside of 45 yards and has the range to attempt kicks beyond 50. Crawshaw can kick the ball a mile but has just been too inconsistent.

TE B- May have plenty of talent but the returning players have very little game time.

WR I would give Shorter an A and Bs for Henderson and Whittemore. Everyone else is an unknown quantity

DL Dexter is a stud. Cox is physically an A but plays himself out of position too much. The rest have too little time to give them a grade.

OL I would give the starters a solid B. Our problem is depth. Once the starters are out we drop to a C or lower depending on how many are out.

I’m excited about our secondary with Raymond and PT coaching our guys. For the first time in many years both safety and corner will have quality coaches and lights out recruiters . Obviously we need to see what the rest of the D staff looks like but the back end is under great hands . Don’t forget we will also have J Hill and Kamar back that weren’t available this season .

DL and OL will need about 5-6 new additions from the portal of guys that have played CFB with at least some level of success . I could see one of each position added on the DL. Then one guard and a RT. I think we would be okay with Tarquin. Braun on the other hand looks like a rotation guy to me . Not a 50+ snap player on the line .

I think that Braun has the highest ceiling of any of our returning linemen. Try playing next to clowns like Delance and Garbage or Gaurage or whatever and see how any guard looks.
Couple him with Tarquin on the right side and that side will be fine.

Well until UF's safeties consistently make tackles they are in position to make it is hard for me to get the grade above a D. I do agree it could be one of UF's strongest positions. Because UF like all colleges tried to disguise it, people forget that UF had 44 true Frosh this past season including 13 DB: Helm, Marshall, Pouncey, Young, Collier, Graham, Johnson, McDaiel, McMillion, Mitchell, Rodgers, Torrence and Wilcoxson. (And if you do not like the term true Frosh, you can make it 13 DBs with four years of eligibility left heading into the season with no redshirt burned.)

One would like to think with competent coaching the DB position would be solid for years to come, but they must tackle. I would hope the DBs coaches would spend a few Sundays with all the young DB watching NFL games and show them that if they can not tackle they can not play in the leauge. Sure you have to cover some too, but tackling is a must too. Torrence did make some good plays this past season. He also like all UF DBs at times dove at WR/RBs feet and missed completely giving up big plays.

Diwun Black at CB? Isn’t he a S or LB?

I agree, but in his defense, with young DBs it is pretty much a cap shoot where you list them. They all claim/want to be CBs, but over their years at UF they find their best spot. Also with a new staff a number of players are likely to change position.

I would say most UF fans with an opinion of this would say White was UF's best OL last year and has termendous potential. (Some of this of course from the various sites that breakdown UF game film.) It was after White was hurt that the running game took a step back. I think you are too hard to Gourage. I am in agreement the right side of UF's OL Delance and Reese/Braun were disappointing.

Reese should be a real warning shot for UF fans. He was a solid four year starter under the dim lights of MSU. He transfers to the bright lights of UF and is never really as good. A good player elsewhere is not necessarily viewed the same at UF.

May have been posted elsewhere, but SDS has a great writeup.

First and 10: Is Florida really that bad? In a word, yes

Excerpt:
“We recruited with no home base, no foundation of what we were looking for,” a former Florida staffer told me. “The prevailing idea from the top down was we’re not begging players to come here.”

That’s how you end a 4-year coaching run at an SEC blue blood with 2 transfer portal starters on the interior of the defensive line.

That’s how you end a 4-year run with an offensive line that never got better, and at one point in the 2021 season, had 9 false start penalties in one game. The same line that, on the first play of the bowl game, was flagged for — wait for it — a false start.

That’s how you end a 4-year run with no receiver on the roster with deep speed to stretch defenses.

That’s how you follow the historically worst season in the history of defense at Florida in 2020, with an offense tied for last in all of college football with 18 interceptions in 2021.

When you have no recruiting identity, everything suffers because nothing is a priority. There is no rhyme or reason to how and why things fail.

They just fail.

“You know how many times I heard, ‘We’ll address that in the (transfer) portal,’” another former Florida staffer told me. “You’re the flagship university in the best state (for recruiting) in the country. You don’t need the portal for anything.”

You do when you have no recruiting identity, when there’s sporadic interest in recruiting from the head coach – and that attitude filters down to assistants and other personnel staffers. Whether you like it or not, high school players like to be wooed.

They like to be told they’re everything, and there’s nothing more critical to the success of your program. They like to feel important, and they want to know why you – and not someone else – is their direct path to the NFL.

So when the staff’s attitude – trickled down from the head coach — is take the next guy who wants to play for us instead of working harder on the better player, you end up with an implosion on multiple fronts.

Want to know why it went from 29 wins in 3 years under Mullen to the Gators’ worst SEC record since 1979? Because poor recruiting – and recruiting habits — finally caught up to the program.

Those things can’t be overcome in Year 1 of a new staff – no matter how efficient and proficient the staff.

This is what Billy Napier inherited. It will likely get worse before it gets better.

Yep you can either chose to believe:

1. The sour grapes of the guys on their way out in an article written by guys selling subscriptions on the basis that UF's recruiting is going to be much much better.

2. Or the fact that the UF roster "recruiting talent" was rated 7th in the nation for both the 2020 and 20201 seasons.

2021 College Football Team Talent Composite

Your choice.

@AndrewSpiveyGC: Safety Trey Dean will return to Florida

I guess it’s okay for the kickoff team. But I’d rather see what we have with McMillon and see Kamari play. Maybe Toney talked to him about not being a box safety and more of a cover guy . Flipping spots with Torrance perhaps . Only real thing I could think of because Trey isn’t physical or a good open field tackler .

"Down-the-road" work to be done. Let me start by putting forth this slick promo on a seasoned player everyone has seen play.

Maybe Dean benefits from the new staff. It surely cannot hurt. But he's got work to do. Perhaps again, the coaching will prompt that improvement.

I'm deeply disappointed... the thread title is HIGHLY misleading and a trick to get people like me to fall for the click bait! It's all about... dudes! :(
