Since Napier ran a version of the spread at UL, if a player does not fit the spread, I would say he likely does not fit the Napier spread offense. That said, I think Wright is ok, but not a top shelf RB. I was quite unhappy when he took carries away from Pierce and Davis this year, not to mention if Pierce and Davis were not to get those carries, I would have rather seen what Bowman or Lingard could do.

I agree. I've actually been looking forward to seeing NW in this offense.

Wright changed for me... The first year he played, he hit the line and tacklers with authority. The last two seasons he's been a more tentative "dancer." It's been frustrating

Perception can be a weird thing. In Wright's first season of action where he only played in 3 games to preserve a redshirt, his longest run was 5 yards and he averaged 2 yards/carry.

His redshirt frosh year he averaged 3.9 yards/carry with a long of 26 yards.

This past season he averaged 4.3 yards/carry with a long of 34 yeards.

Mind you this all happened in an offensive system that isn't tailored for his running style. While we may have better RB's on the roster, I think it's premature to automatically assume that Wright won't be able to compete for the starting role. He has good vision, which is going to help him a lot in Billy's offense.

To me shot gun v. pistol means little as both can be spread offenses. As far as I have seen both can use the modern spread approach of the QB bringing the ball to the stationary RB rather than the RB running to a point where the hand off takes place. I agree you can in a pistol have a RB going down hill, but I did not see that much if at all in the UL offense. Additionally the blocking scheme seems to be consistent with taking the ball to the RB and letting him pick a hole. UL like UF last year double teamed the down linemen and the had one of the two OL scrape to the LBs after the double team block was secured.

I see the reason to the stationary RB as it minimizes negative plays by allowing the RB to decide not to go where there is a missed block. On the other hand I personally like to mix in some old school running plays where your OL just blocks without a bunch of double teams, but you get the RB to the line fast before the DL/LBs can react. Of course with this type of play you need faith that your OL will not completely blow a one on one block at the point of attack. I particularly would mix in this type of play on short yardage plays.

Of course all of this is just running offense. At UF you BETTER have a passing attack based on beating opponent and not be hoping you can run to set up that pass. The run first approach will cause you to lose the fan base as we will move on to who UF should hire in December 2023 if that is your approach.

Did anyone see EJ's ever-present tendency to pull the handoff back out from his RB's grip.? That RB had to worry-focus on keeping Emory from promoting a fumble just when they should instinctually be scanning for daylight to charge through. So, EJ hurt our drives in more ways than just floppy passing INTs and hesitation sacks. More than normal for your QB, EJ monkey-wrenched our offensive effectiveness. Just imagine our RB's dilemma having to continually worry about EJ forcing a fumble on them on any play.? All that happened right there with the onrush crashing through.

I agree! The reports I’ve heard is the kid is being very business-like with this situation. Still, we have his o-line coach and a system he is familiar with. Those are solid pluses for our side. I’m not sure about the depth chart. Do you think that works for or against us? This is all about the nfl for Torrence.

I don't want to be too negative about Jones, but I agree that his decision making in the run game was no more decisive or correct than in the passing game.

Yeah I had these same thoughts as soon as I saw this news. He knows the coaches and the system. Probably has a leg up on the other rbs. I wouldn't give up if I'm Lingard or Bowman. They will play 3 backs and they will all get plenty of chances.

This comes down to how well Napier is communicating with Bowman, Lingard and Wright. Mullen was probably too sensitve to recruiting over guys on the roster. It is also possible not to be careful enough about guys with pro prospects or UF will pay a price in recruiting.

Wright got hurt and may not even be full strength to start fall camp. We got the two 5* transfers, ETN and now MJ. We need bodies.
