MLB draft rules are slightly complicated, I will attempt to clarify. Unlike football a HS Sr. can be drafted by MLB. The drafted player has 3 options to consider 1) take the slotted signing bonus and head to the low minor leagues for three to five years on busses in many stops or. 2) Sign to play at a CC and be eligible for MLB draft the following year, rinse repeat the next season, 3) go to a 4 year university and become ineligible for MLB draft for 3 seasons.
This complicates recruiting too as when you are a school like UF and are pursuing top talent you have to believe the kid wants the college experience or you could be missing out on another player when you offer and lock up a player who is going pro. MLB actually favors kids drafted below the 5th or 6th round to go to college if they have a ride to a top program for development on someone else's dime. Recently MLB has greatly reduced their investment in minor league teams because it's expensive and most wash out before the show. They have also cut the number of rounds in the draft to 20 from 43 along with what they dub competitive balance rounds which are compensatory pick for teams the suck and play in smaller markets.
So understanding this more inclusive process makes HC's like Sully a value as he recruits talent that wants to come to UF and he has a history of developing a lot of 1st round MLB players. It's a long list of successful transition regardless of what the "fire Sully now" crowd opines. The last two teams have been frustrating to watch that fall on the head coach. He needs to jettison Greg Bell and re-evaluate other staff or restless boosters will demand a change at the top.
Yes thanks for pointing that out. Being 21 provides the only exception to waiting until year three.A D1 baseball player doesn't have to wait three years necessarily. A player is draft eligible if he turns 21 by the signing date after getting drafted.
Remember Brady McConnell? He was a draft eligible sophomore and chose to move on. Last year Nathan Hickey was a second year draft guy too.
It's just UFB. I hope Billy hangs on to itHang that photo all over the damn locker room. No respect
I just saw this tweet that gives 2 perspectives on Gator Baseball and what is happening in the dugout
Totally this. His divorce, his affair, that led to the kids being murdered. Way to much personal drama going on with him now.I’ve always been a big supporter of Sully. His record speaks for itself, especially against FSU/Miami. But I’m 100% sure that over last couple of years his personal life has gone south and it’s carried over into the dugout. TBH he needs a fresh start more than we need someone else, but I bet he stays one more year.
