That is some pure horse magic. Horses are usually dead tired after running but Rich Strike looked he wanted to fight and go run it again.

The Ocala Horse Simplification was 35-1 and finished 4th

That was hilarious at the end. He was pissed off like he had a chip on his shoulder for not being invited earlier.
The escort rider was punching him.

I have to weigh in with my stupidest decision I ever made story. I do it every Derby. Some people think I'm dumb. Some laugh at me. I deserve it. Approaching Derby time I was equal partners with someone with lots of money. That by the way was the only time I failed at something. I never did a partnership again. If you don't have the cajones to risk it all yourself, don't do it.

Anyhow my partner comes to me and says they have the fantastic horse and they're going to race him in the Derby. My immediate thought was that's not very smart, but if you've got the money to throw away on that kind of long shot go for it. The next week he invites me and mrs '46 to the race, owners box and all. I'm not rolling in money. I was still under 30 and by the time Mrs '46 finishes shopping for that trip, I'll have to sell the house. Besides that, we're going to drive up together. That's going to be a really depressing drive back. So I decline the invitation.

The name of their "long shot"? Affirmed. He won the Derby and went on to win the Triple. We could have been in the owners boxes for those races. We were not invited to the Preakness or Belmont.

Additional background: It would be another 37 years before another horse won the triple. For a long time I wanted to see Affirmed's name as the last to do it. After about 30 years I caved. Ricky my partner finally said it would be good for racing if another horse did it. We remained friends until his death.

From the head on angle the move to the outside and around the horse hugging the rail had my heart in my throat. Jokey to horse, hey Rich there's no room here. Take a hard right. He jerks the reigns, Rich Strike's head does a 90 degree, and he takes off. Gutsy Jock. Back when I rode if I did that to one of our horses, I'd have found my rear end firmly planted on the ground.

How many 80 - 1 bets were made? Not many I think.

Jeez. Talk about turning on the gas. This is ridiculous. It’s as if the rest of the field was standing still.

A good friend who grew up in the horse racing business in Ocala told me this morning that based on the horse's behaviour after the race, he would be surprised if the horse passed the drug test.

He was wired! Wouldn’t surprise me either. There are some drugs that are legal to take unless you test positive on racing day. That’s what happened to Baffert’s Derby winner and was DQ’d.

That horse is an ornery bad-ass. Did you see the way he was looking at other horses during the race? Like, "I'm coming for your ass next."

I'd be surprised if he didn't make some more noise in the Preakness.

There's zero chance that horse is doped up. Get real, haters.

Not hating OX. To make up that much ground is very very unusual. Couple that with his behavior after the race and it's a legitimate question. On the other hand when the Jockey jerked him hard to the outside on the final drive (watch his head), the horse didn't lose momentum. He kept his momentum. Plenty of horses would have slowed down before they got back up to speed. Some would have said to the Jock screw you, I'm done.

Well, if he's doped they'll nail him and disqualify him in the coming days. Don't hold your breath.
