Can I give you a funny……….kind ofMy mother's brother, our uncle, was "the mean uncle". He owned a lot of land. Had a huge pond that had a constant water flow using a spillway. Those weekends when we nephews and nieces visited, around the supper table, all the uncles regaled us about the many times the hugest catfish, "Old Bill" would pull his miraculous escapes. The stories always pointed out that there was an ongoing feud-duel explicitly between Old Bill and uncle Jake -- like at all outings, Old Bill chose uncle Jake's hook to latch on to and escape.
On one visit, the 3 brothers (uncles) took us 4 nieces & nephews fishing in 2 simple metal bass boats. {One of those little nieces became the wife of the music mixer, Rodney Mills, who mixed "Sweet Home Alabama".} Suddenly, uncle Jake whipped out & threw lighted sticks of dynamite into his pond. When all the concussed fish floated up, uncle Jake sought out "Old Bill", pulled out a shotgun, and blew him to smitherines. {Mean uncle Jake.} My older sister tells of the time when she was 5 years old, uncle Jake says: "Linda, want to go pet Henry.?"(Henry was a tamed loving little calf you could pet.) Uncle Jake called Henry over and whipped out his rifle and blasted unexpecting Henry between the eyes right in front of his 5 year old niece -- scary mean old uncle Jake. (Back in the 50s. Jake was always home on railroad disability, where he sat and drank & chain-smoked all his days. I think always grumbling mean uncle Jake liked that lifestyle.)
Nothing like digging a Big Ass Grouper off the bottom.I told Mrs. Nalt a week or so ago that I want to take a trip to the GOM so I can take the boys out deep sea fishing. My youngest, James was 4 y/o the last time we went and I didn't take him so I really want to. I have a work trip out to Kauai, HI later this month for about a month but after that I'd like to do so. Looking for suggestions as to the best place to go (pretty much targeting Pensacola eastward to the PCB area but not opposed to going farther east) and if possible, a boat recommendation. Not interested in a charter boat as they are too expensive. Hoping we can each catch our limit on Red Snapper and maybe a Trigger fish or few... And anything else that might bite...
That’s a mess of fish, what did you get your Cobia on?Did y'all miss me?
Spent 6 days fishing at Econfina with my brother in law as my boat mate, Sunday through Friday.
Started slow, had a great day Thursday with 6 boats catching 2 person limits of trout. The 7th boat being a mud motor style, stayed closer to shore.
Nearly blown off the water on Friday.
Caught my first Cobia, a 20 incher on Tuesday and a 25 on Wednesday, both undersized, but safely released to grow and fight another day. One of the group landed a 35 inch Cobia.
7 boats fished, 2 per boat, 203 trout, 42 redfish, plus multiple flounder and rock bass harvested for the freezer and the Friday night fish fry.
My largest trout was 23.5 inches The largest in the group was 25 inches. My b-i-l and I released several fish over 19 inches since you van only keep one over 19 per boat per day.
We ate some good meals, made some great memories and enjoyed excellent fellowship with friends old and new.

You guys ever catch pin fish and use for bait?@RiverRat
I caught several fish on these, Superjack Shrimp Tails | Hogie's Lures ||| Saltwater Lures (hogielures.com), white with chartreuse tail.
Put a square of these on your hook, for increased action also.

One of the best ways to use them is get a small to med pin fish cut their head off with a pair of shears of filet knife then cut the remaining part of the pin fish right down the middle so you have two baits the top pcs. with the top fin and the bottom with the belly, fish it under your popping cork on a number three kale hook, a great bait this time of year
I've caught lots of Gator trout with live pinfish. I've caught trout whose mouths looked too small to swallow them. Fish are weird. You guys ever catch pin fish and use for bait?

Great question. I guess it's somewhat subjective. I consider a Gator trout one that is unusually big for the local area. Most of my trout fishing has been in the Fort George inlet area. I consider anything over 5 lbs a Gator. What size qualifies as a gator trout in your estimation?
Loved trout fishing in the Carolina streams. I haven't been in decades. :(
