What you say here is what I'm coming to understand about the characteristics. Of course, there are many years of unlearning to be done. I can only cringe when I think about pulling the tab on a lukewarm Schlitz while fishing on Shepard's Slough just off of the Apalachicola River or stopping by the place in Mexico Beach as a teenager where they'd fill your milk jug with tepid Bush for a buck. There's now a better way and better brands and as Pines says, I think I owe myself that much. I've had too much bad to mediocre beer (which, depending on what you believe, may or may not be so). Time to really enjoy the gusto!
I'm not here to fool anybody - I drank my share of Rhinelander, Gobles, Schlitz, Hamms, RW&B, Generic................ I could keep going. My rule back in the 80s and early 90s was to never pay more than $2 for a 6-pack. You could get 12 packs of Hamms for $2.99 in some places.
Had my first Sierra Nevada Pale in the early 90s in G'ville, then tried some Rogue beers that were around (Mocha Porter and Special Bitter), and my taste buds were appreciating these more flavorful beers. For a while I even got into Pete's beers and Sam Adams before leaving Florida, as they too brought more flavor. Then I moved to the west coast and the rest is history. I'm a beer snob anymore.

Rogue Beers are still my favorite.... by a long shot. Dead Guy Ale is still my #1. Their brewery on Newport bay (you can see it on the deadliest catch episodes out of that bay) is an incredible place to drink beer and have amazing food.

Been there several times, awesome place. Have even stayed in the apartments above the pub downtown. We like to say the Rogue is very proud of their beers, as they're typically a little more expensive most other craft beers; but it's good stuff and well worth it, IMO.
I'm also a big fan of Pelican Brewing in Pacific City, just up the coast from Newport. Beautiful place with great beers as well.

You can stay in a hotel across the street that pretty much gives you this view.

Love that place too. My ALL time best 4th of Julys were the 2 I spent in front of that brewery in that exact spot in the picture. Surfing is great (in a wetsuit). Big huge beach fire going. And thousands of people lighting off amazing fireworks. If you have a chance to be there on the 4th.... do it.

The craft beer movement is really making it fun. The great thing about beer is even if you invest in a whole six pack... you are only out $10. Is there an ABC fine wine and spirits or Total Wine near you? At ABC, you can through 3 aisles of craft beer and custom make your own 6 pack with 6 different bottles of anything you want. And then when you realize how amazing beer actually is.... make the mecca trip to Asheville, NC which has more breweries per capita than any city in the US (I think there is 26). Holy hell it is beer heaven. I actually leave Tuesday night to go to Brevard, NC and do nothing but flyfish and drink fresh, craft beer for a week. The Sierra Nevada brewery up there is one of the most amazing buildings I have ever stepped into:

There are 2-3 ABC's in Tallahassee, but it's been years since I set foot in one, so I'll have to plan a return just to familiarize with their offerings. Asheville sounds like a worthwhile trip. The missus has been wanting to go to the Biltmore during the holidays, so it sounds like there may be some bartering to be done. Once more, I appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge, opinions, and experiences where better beer is concerned.

I am a huge fan of hefeweizens and my go to beer at the local grocery store is Hoegaarden (pronounced "who"). It's best poured in a pint glass.

Thanks, brother. I'll be adding this to my to-do list.

On the way down to Jax yesterday, I stopped in at ABC in Tallahassee and was surprised to find both Funky Buddha Floridian and Hoegarrden. Both were good, but I'd rank the Hoegarrden a little ahead of the Buddha, as it was slightly more bitter, but not off putting by any means. I think I like the Florida Cracker the best of the three news that I've tried lately, but all lived up to what you guys have shared. A little more experience will definitely benefit. One downer from the trip was not getting by Total Wine in Jax to get my Erdinger :(

Unfiltered IPA? Nice. I had a similar one at the Sierra Nevad brewery a few weeks ago. They also had a filtered hef to compliment it. Both were pretty cool.

If you go to Asheville, take the comedy bus tour. They let you drink whatever beer you bring on board, and have a stop halfway through to relieve the bladder then refill it, as the stop is near a brewery

And the tour is hilarious, even if you are sober. Our bus was attacked by Sister Hairy Mary, who boarded it at squirt gun point, looking for sinners

I like those a lot too. However, I had a six pack of non refrigerated bottles cook off in my garage! They started popping their bottle caps. And it wasn't during hot weather.

A tragic loss of good beer.
