Got you a quality camera there huh?
Edited that sucker way down and still makes for a decent resolution.

Nothing like my S6. It can turn natural beauty into a national disaster.

Camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T5i with the 55-250 IS lens. The image I posted was taken by my girl friend and cropped but the resolution was not changed.

Fully automatic settings were used: 250 mm, ISO 250, f 6.3, 1/320 second

Here is my friend, the gator again. He (she?) hasn't been around that much recently.

This picture is a composite of two taken with a fixed 500 mm lens, again with the Canon EOS Rebel T5i. I stitched the two together to get the full image.

Remember, this is from across a canal of about 100 feet.

Maybe this one from today's shoot is a little better. The real question is whether I am gaining any resolution by using a higher power albeit less high quality lens. Today's shots were made using a tripod while the others were hand held with a high quality stabilizing lens.

It looks like the system won't take the full size file so he is one of the gator resampled to be about half the size followed by the head from the same shot at full resolution.

That's some nice stitching, Pilot.

Here is a shot from yesterday. Hand held with Canon IS (image stabilized) full automatic zoom lens at 250 mm 1/320 second. At 250 mm, the gator fills only half the frame, so this image is cropped. To me, this image looks better than the one with the 500 mm lens that required the use of a tripod and had to be stitched together.

Few if anybody can take decent pictures with a 500 hand held. I have used a fence to stabilize the 500 mirror lens I own. Nice zoom and you must have some steady hands.

I used a relatively inexpensive 500 mm lens on a tripod. I probably should have also used a remote shutter release to further lessen any vibration. But what I found interesting was the fact that I could get equal or slightly better results from blowing up an image from a 250 mm lens hand held that has image stabilization.

I didn't really do comprehensive or exhaustive tests. The question was whether I would get noticeably better results taking the time to set up and use the 500 mm on a tripod versus using the 250 mm hand held and cropping. (Before I started, I didn't realize I would have to stitch two images together to get the gator in one frame with the 500 mm lens).

Yes 500mm mirror lens is quite affordable, but as you found they have limits. With the resolution today you can do a lot of things with digital enhancement. Back in the day it was not so simple. Thanks for the pics.

I go way back in photography. The modern equipment is very impressive in many ways. I've done my own black and white darkroom work but never got into setting up a color darkroom. These days, what you can do digitally goes far beyond what you could accomplish in even the most sophisticated darkroom.

I've had the Canon EOS Rebel T5i now for a couple of years. I had a few early digital cameras that were nice but nothing compared to the Canon. Prior to the digital age, I had a Minolta Maxxum 7000.
